First Alert Weather Day: Heat breaks, storms return late

Fort Wayne is moving out of extreme heat that’s been in place through 8 p.m., but holiday-weekend weather won’t be calm. Storm chances build after 9 p.m., with the best window for heavy rain, gusty winds, and thunderstorms coming late tonight and again from ev

For many people in Fort Wayne, the day has been about pushing through the last stretch of extreme heat. Tonight, the countdown ends at 8 p.m.—that’s when the First Alert Weather Day for the Extreme Heat Warning finally moves out.

Temperatures reached into the 90s, with conditions that sent the heat index into the 100s. The air has been oppressive, and the humidity hasn’t helped. But there’s a narrow window that feels like a breather: plenty of dry time this afternoon before storm chances begin to build.

The timing matters most. The best chance for heavy rain, gusty winds, and thunderstorms arrives after 9 p.m. That means the holiday-weekend kickoff won’t be the quiet kind—if you’re heading out or planning anything later, this is the window to watch closely.

By July 4, temperatures will still be in the 90s. The heat index is expected to reach near 100. Rain won’t be a complete washout, but it still comes in waves: on Saturday, morning and afternoon scattered storms are expected.

The more reliable break from the wet weather comes earlier in the day. There’s still plenty of dry time in the afternoon before evening storms return, again expected around 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Even if the storms bring a sense of relief, the weather won’t feel truly “cool.” Next week is expected to bring baby steps toward comfort, with temperatures in the high to mid 80s. Dew points are expected to remain in the 70s, meaning the tropical humidity isn’t going anywhere.

Staying hydrated and cooling down is still the message—especially with heat index values lingering near 100 and storms rolling in at night. As the holiday weekend gets going. the forecast is clear on one point: enjoy the holiday. but keep an eye on the scattered storm chances and plan for wet. windy conditions later.

  1. They said heat breaks but storms return late… so basically nothing changes lol. Just swap the misery from sun to thunder. I’ll be inside after 9.

  2. Wait I thought extreme heat warnings mean like the whole week is cancelled? My cousin said it was supposed to cool overnight and now it’s still 90s July 4?? Confusing. Also gusty winds during fireworks sounds like a bad time.

  3. Storms after 9pm, then again from ev (??) like what does that even mean. Is it ending at 10 or starting again at like 6? Either way I’m guessing the rain won’t hit my street but it’ll hit someone’s BBQ. Hydrate, sure, but with humidity like that you basically sweat through your shirt instantly.
