NEVADA CITY, Calif., September 10, 2026 – The National Weather Service offices in Reno and Sacramento have issued Damaging Wind Alerts and Fire Weather Watches for the weekend of September 12 and 13, 2026.
Periods of gusty winds are expected alongside low daytime humidity and limited to poor overnight recoveries. South to west winds on Saturday shift toward north to east winds Saturday night – Monday.
PG&E has issued potential Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) warnings in the valley and the higher elevations of the Sierra.
Liberty Energy, the east side provider, may implement a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) for Verdi (CA), Floriston, Markleeville, Woodfords, Desolation Hotel (Hope Valley), Topaz, Coleville, and Walker area customers.
For Nevada and Placer counties, a potential PSPS is slated across the I-80 corridor from Emigrant Gap to Donner State Memorial Park by PG&E.
Here is a map, based on PG&E’s current data, for the potential PSPS on Saturday and/or Sunday. Note that as we get closer to the event, the data will be refined by PG&E and we’ll update the map.
Prepare Now
- Charge your electronic devices and check your flashlight and radio batteries.
- Have repair supplies available.
- Secure any outdoor furniture.
- Be aware of changing conditions and monitor your local media for weather alerts and updates.
Electrical Safety
- Never touch downed wires: If you see a downed power line, assume it is energized and extremely dangerous. Do not touch or try to move it—and keep children and animals away. Report downed power lines immediately by calling 9-1-1 and then PG&E at 1-800-743-5002.
- Use generators safely: Customers with standby electric generators should ensure they are properly installed by a licensed electrician in a well-ventilated area. Improperly installed generators pose a significant danger to customers, as well as crews working on powerlines. If using portable generators, be sure they are in a well-ventilated area.
- Use flashlights, not candles: During a power outage, use battery-operated flashlights and not candles, due to the risk of fire. And keep extra batteries on hand. If you must use candles, please keep them away from drapes, lampshades, animals and small children. Never leave candles unattended.
- Have a backup phone: If you have a telephone system that requires electricity to work, plan to have a standard telephone or cellular phone ready as a backup. Charge your devices ahead of time.
