FIFA reshapes World Cup 2026 anthem routine

FIFA unveils – With days left until the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada, FIFA has confirmed a new 360-degree pre-match ceremony. Instead of the long-standing tunnel-to-horizontal-line anthem format, both teams and referees will gather around the centre circle, f

For years, the World Cup’s pre-match ritual has followed a familiar script: players and mascots walk out behind the match officials, then line up as the national anthems echo across the stadium.

Now, with the 2026 tournament set to begin across the USA, Mexico and Canada in just a handful of days, FIFA has moved to rewrite that moment. Before every game, FIFA will introduce a new 360-degree pre-match ceremony, built around an unexpected change to the traditional proceedings.

At each end of the field, two large curved country flag banners will be positioned. As the anthems are played, both teams—including their substitutes—will gather around the centre circle. Crucially. both teams will face each other during the national anthems. with players and referees positioned in that same central-circle setup.

FIFA described the plan as an immersive spectacle designed to reach fans from every seat. In its official statement. FIFA said the ceremony has been “developed with fans and teams at its heart” and guided by tracks from the Official FIFA World Cup 2026 Album. FIFA added that no matter where supporters sit. each will have “a distinct and engaging perspective. ” with “extra-large country flag banners and on-pitch elements carefully positioned” to involve the crowd.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino framed the shift as more than a visual upgrade. He said having all players and referees face each other in the centre circle during the national anthems will create “a moment of unity. pride and emotion” that “truly belongs to the teams and to everyone in the stadium.” Infantino added that the World Cup is “about every player and every fan. ” and that the new pre-match ceremony reflects that.

The update comes with another layer that could make the atmosphere louder as the tournament goes on. FIFA confirmed that later in the tournament, the pre-match ceremony will incorporate additional elements such as coloured smoke or pyrotechnics.

FIFA also tied the presentation to its commercial ecosystem. It said the youth programme and the players’ tunnel will feature both traditional and new integrations of FIFA’s Commercial Partners, listing adidas, Coca-Cola, Kia, Mengniu, Qatar Airways and Quaker among those involved.

There is already a recent reminder inside FIFA’s own history that changing the tempo of a pre-match show has consequences. Last year at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, FIFA experimented by introducing every player separately. FIFA noted that the experiment ended up delaying the kick-off of various matches.

With that memory still fresh, the 2026 ceremony’s reception will likely hinge on the same question fans always notice in the early minutes: does the new format heighten the occasion without disrupting the start of the match?
