FIFA hands out multiple suspensions to Argentina for World Cup Final post-game fracas

The 2026 World Cup Final, played at MetLife Stadium, ended with a fight between members of the two teams involved. FIFA has now issued significant discipline for Argentina’s role in sparking the post-match fracas with Spain.
Via Allie Rampling of The Athletic, the punishment includes a total of 21 games in suspensions and more than $500,000 in fines.
Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes received a 10-game suspension and a $90,000 fine for apparently grabbing Spain defender Eric Garcia by the throat and later throwing midfielder Gavi to the ground.
Argentina defender Nahuel Molina will serve a seven-game suspension and pay $90,000 for apparently striking Spain midfielder Rodri in the stomach.
Argentina midfielder Thiago Almada emerged with a one-game suspension and a $30,000 fine for “unsporting behavior.” Team official Roberto Ayala will miss three matches for one count of assault. Ayala also was fined $30,000.
Spain didn’t get off scot-free. Gavi received a one-game suspension and a $30,000 fine for “unsporting behavior.”
FIFA separately fined the Argentine Football Association $310,000, arising from the actions of its fans. The specific accusations relate to “using a sports event for demonstrations of a non-sporting nature,” “discrimination and racist abuse,” and “order and security at matches.” The discipline includes attendance restrictions at its next two international home games.
All punishments are subject to a potential appeal.
Much of the chaos that triggered the suspensions wasn’t televised by FIFA’s international live feed. But enough cameras captured the misconduct to prompt FIFA to drop the hammer on Argentina.
