Father charged after Maine crash killed 5-year-old

A 33-year-old Indiana man, Dion Campbell, faces multiple charges after a crash in Maine last week killed his 5-year-old son and injured his 10-month-old daughter. Police say he was driving under the influence, and that neither child was properly restrained.

Late Thursday, June 25, a state trooper came upon a crash at about 11:30 p.m. at the intersection of Routes 9 and 193 in Township 22. The child in the front passenger seat was a 5-year-old boy, and his condition was rapidly deteriorating, police said. Troopers began life-saving measures until EMS personnel arrived. The boy was pronounced deceased at the scene.
In the same vehicle, police said, there was only one other person: the father and his 10-month-old daughter. Both the father and the infant were taken to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening.
The man behind the wheel was identified as Dion Campbell, 33, of Elkhart, Indiana. Police said the children were not properly restrained at the time of the crash.
The state police preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection before striking an embankment. Based on what investigators found. Campbell is now facing several charges. including driving under the influence. manslaughter. endangering the welfare of a child. and aggravated driving to endanger. police said in a Wednesday release.
Campbell has been held since his arrest on Monday night and was expected to be arraigned Wednesday.
