FAI Junior Cup headlines Limerick District League finals weekend

THERE IS plenty on offer again this week in Junior Soccer circles as the season races to a finish. Beginning on Thursday evening the U17 Div One Carroll Cup final pairs Corbally Utd and Newport at 7.30pm in Jackman Park. It’s a surprise pairing as neither side challenged in the league race but you can be sure they will be well geared up for this one. The sides have already met three times this season with the Tipperary side prevailing in all three but that
will count for nothing come kick off time. Also on Thursday, the Open Cup is down to quarter final stage with three of the four games up for decision. Summerville B take on Prospect B in the local derby. Its 1st v 2nd in Division 2A when Hyde B host Brazuca Utd and Coonagh v Corbally C makes up the list. In the Youth Premier League, Fairview Rangers, hoping to close the gap on leaders Pike Rvs, face a tricky assignment at home to Aisling
Annacotty while in Division One, leaders Pallas are away to Herbertstown. On Friday evening the Under 17 Div Two Kennelly Cup final is listed for Jackman Park. Second placed Caherconlish take on an improving Murroe side. It’s Under 17 finals again on Saturday when the Premier League decider will be played with the semi’s still not sorted at the time of writing. FAI Junior Cup champions Fairview Rgs face a stern test when they visit old rivals St Michaels AFC on Saturday afternoon. Saints faced
a torrid time last weekend when they went down 3-1 to v Janesboro in the FAI Senior Cup. They also had two men sent off to rub salt into the wounds. In the same competition Fairview opted for an experimental young side when they fell 3-0 to Tolka Rovers. Fairview have been dealing with a number of injury worries and hopes are high that they will be sorted by the weekend and will be hoping to give the competiton a real crack this season. Both
sides are hugely experienced in these big games and always produce a good tussle when they cross paths.Expect the same on Saturday. Limerick’s other hopefuls Pike Rvs and Mungret are in FAI Junior Cup action a day later. Pike are favoured with home advantage when they host Arrow Harps. The Sligo side lie fifth in their Premier League but seem to be keeping their best form for the cup action. Pike Rovers seem to be getting a bit of form at the right time so
I expect them to advance. Mungret Regional may have a tougher assignment when they travel to crack Cork outfit Coachford AFC. Mungret Regional like nothing better than defying the odds and in manager Paul Danaher they have an FAI winner to guide them. On Sunday the Healy Webb semi-final between Moyross A and Star Rovers could be a thrilling cup affair while the Lipper Cup is also down to the last four. Abbey Rovers play Brazuca Utd and Lough Derg A host Coonagh Utd for
a place in the final.
