The New York Yankees had to make some tough decisions this week, and one of them was demoting Anthony Volpe to Triple-A after his struggles over the season. Fans always seem to be the toughest on the players, and they’ve either supported Volpe through the season or criticized him at every turn.
For former Yankees outfielder Cameron Maybin, he just wants people to turn the page and be grateful for what Volpe has done for the clubhouse. At the same time, he wants everyone to be excited for what George Lombardi Jr. is expected to do after getting called up.
“The kid grew up dreaming of being a Yankee, got to wear the pinstripes, and by every account gave that organization everything he had. That deserves respect. Be excited about George Lombard Jr. I am too. But why does that have to come with taking shots at Volpe? That’s weird. It’s always the people who’ve never competed on a stage anywhere close to that level who are the loudest tearing him down. Turn the page. Appreciate what Volpe gave, root for what’s next, and stop pouring salt in the wound. Respect costs nothing,” Maybin wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Manager Aaron Boone already let it be known how it felt having to demote Volpe and also Jasson Dominguez, but he still believes in their skill set.
“Two people that we love and think highly of, and think still have very bright big-league careers ahead of them,” Boone said.
The hope is that the demotion doesn’t tear down their confidence, but instead builds it. There’s still time in the season for them to turn things around, and they could find themselves back in the majors in no time if they put the work in.
