Jimi Hendrix revolutionized the electric guitar in the late 60s with an innovative blend of blues, rock and psychedelia. The trailblazing guitarist and singer teamed up with Noel Redding on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums to create a power trio that changed the course of rock and roll. The Jimi Hendrix Experience only released three albums, but each one boasts a myriad of hit songs including “Purple Haze,” “Fire,” “Manic Depression,” “Crosstown Traffic,” “Foxy Lady,” and more. The extraordinary musician was left-handed and played a right-handed guitar restrung upside down. He cranked his amplifiers to high volumes to produce his signature feedback and tone. Hendrix’s unconventional playing style combined with effects like fuzz, Uni-Vibe and wah-wah helped create the psychedelic sounds that continue to influence new generations of musicians. ‘Axis: Bold as Love’ (1968)
The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s second album, Axis: Bold as Love, was released in January 1968 in the US and one month prior in the UK. The effort is more melodic, experimental and has a broader mix of music than his debut, with an emphasis on arrangements and songwriting. “Spanish Castle Magic” is a heavy rock anthem that was inspired by a club Hendrix played just outside his hometown of Seattle. In the lyrics, Jimi refers to the Spanish Castle as a “groovy place” with a “groovy name.” “Little Wing” is a celebrated song that has been brilliantly covered by Stevie Ray Vaughan, Derek and the Dominos, as well as Eric Clapton and Steve Winwoodon their tour in 2008 and 2009.
Axis: Bold as Love includes “Castles Made of Sand,” “If 6 Was 9,” and “She’s So Fine,” which features bassist Noel Redding on vocals and has a seriously 60s vibe. ‘Electric Ladyland’ (1968)
Jimi Hendrix’s final studio album is the expansive double LP Electric Ladyland. It blends soul, funk, and extended improvisation into the mix, anchored by two long compositions: the 15-minute blues adventure “Voodoo Chile” and the atmospheric 13-minute odyssey “1983… (A Merman I Should Turn to Be).” The seminal 1968 record has a lot more tonal variety with Hendrix’s guitar sounds. He added overdubs, guitar harmonies and widened the palette of sonic textures using stereo panning, tape manipulation and various guitar effects.
“Crosstown Traffic” is an exceptionally written rocker loaded with sexual innuendos and euphemisms. The psychedelic cover of Bob Dylan‘s “All Along the Watchtower” peaked at number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it Hendrix’s most successful track. The effort is full of hidden gems like “Come On (Let the Good Times Roll),” “Rainy Day, Dream Away,” “Burning of the Midnight Lamp,” and “Little Miss Strange,” which features Noel Redding on vocals. Electric Ladyland is Hendrix’s most experimental and adventurous effort that shines a light on his inventive and legendary guitar work.

‘Are You Experienced’ (1967)
Are You Experienced is the raw and surprising debut album from The Jimi Hendrix Experience. It contains many signature hits, including “Purple Haze,” renowned for its iconic opening guitar riff. The mind-blowing effort was released in the UK in May 1967 and arrived in the US in August with a slightly different tracklisting. The North American version contained “Hey Joe” and “The Wind Cries Mary,” swapping out “Red House” and “Remember,” from the UK edition. Later releases, including the streaming version of the LP, have each of those tracks and more culled from the sessions, including “51st Anniversary” and “Highway Chile.”
The feedback squeal that begins “Foxy Lady” is a furious and volume-driven iconic sound that still leaps out of the speakers. “Manic Depression” is a stand-out gem that has a unique 3/4 swing, driven by underrated drummer Mitch Mitchell. “Love Or Confusion” is a riff-fueled cosmic tune that bridges the gap between Hendrix’s futuristic sounds while maintaining a classic 60s feel. The epic debut album also features the hypnotic “Third Stone From The Sun,” the ubiquitous “Fire,” and “Are You Experienced?” a trippy song that uses a lot of studio techniques popularized by The Beatles1966 album Revolver, including backwards cymbals, reversed guitars and other ethereal sounds to create a mystical tonal landscape.Are You Experienced introduced Jimi Hendrix to the world.
