The horror hits fast, and it doesn’t let go.
In the May 24 episode of “Euphoria,” Jacob Elordi’s character, Nate Jacobs, is killed off in a gruesome sequence that has fans still shaking their heads. Nate is buried alive in a coffin by Jack Topalian’s character, Naz—an outcome tied to a brutal debt.
Naz buries Nate because he was owed nearly $1 million. Nate is supposed to stay buried for 72 hours while his wife, Cassie (Sydney Sweeney), tries to come up with the money to pay Naz back.
But the plan collapses in the worst possible way. Naz leaves a small breathing pipe leading up to the surface so Nate can breathe. Instead, a rattlesnake slithers through the opening and bites Nate, resulting in his death.
Cassie and Maddy (Alexa Demie) do manage to get the money, only to be left in shock when they dig up the coffin and find Nate’s dead body inside it.
That scene sparked immediate, emotional reactions across X, with viewers describing it as the most disturbing outcome imaginable. One fan wrote. “That whole sequence with Nate and the snake in the coffin is like my worst nightmare. ” while another said. “I’m actually traumatized at the scene… I kept telling my sister he was a P**. yet he didn’t deserve to die like that.”.
Other posts focused on the contrast between how much time the show appears to have devoted to Nate’s storyline and the way it ends. One user pointed out that the show’s creators spent significant time building Nate’s character before killing him off. asking. “How do you spend so long making Nate into a complex character to give him a s*** story line and then kill him off in the most underwhelming way possible?”.
Even fans who said they disliked Nate still struggled with how his death was staged. One X user wrote, “As much as I hate Nate Jacobs, I don’t like how he dies in the most horrific way possible in this season. The image of that snake and him inside the coffin is gonna stick in my head forever.”
Elordi also addressed the moment in a post-show HBO segment. The actor described Nate’s fate as a “cool way to go,” adding that Nate “made so many mistakes and so many dark choices.”
After the episode aired, creator Sam Levinson weighed in as well in an Esquire interview published just after the episode. Levinson said he wanted to give the audience what they wanted “in terms of justice or karma. ” but that the payoff would be shaped to stay in their heads: “How can I give them what they want. but make it so horrific and anxiety-inducing that by the time it happens. the audience isn’t so sure they wanted it?”.
