Eric Church is looking back at some of the most memorable moments of his career with his new song “On The Road.”

The 49-year-old country music star released the track on Thursday (September 10), reflecting on years of touring, the legendary musicians he’s shared the stage with, and one of the darkest moments he’s experienced on the road.

What Is Eric Church’s “On The Road” About?

Eric wrote “On The Road” himself, with longtime collaborator Jay Joyce producing the track.

Throughout the song, he recalls performing for 50,000 fans beneath the Northern Lights, playing Colorado’s iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre and sharing the stage with country legends like Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson and George Strait.

The song also includes an emotional reference to the 2017 Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting in Las Vegas. Eric had performed at the festival two nights before the mass shooting, which ultimately claimed 60 lives.

“I’ve seen the devil stop a show in Vegas / I’ve seen those angels get their forever wings,” Eric sings on the new track.

The country star explained that the song was inspired by the people and experiences that have stayed with him throughout his years of touring.

“There’s something about a life on the road where the miles start to blur together, yet the people and the moments never do,” Eric said in a statement. “Those are the things you carry with you.”

“You realize how much of who you are was shaped somewhere between one town and the next, and maybe that’s why you never really stop wondering what’s waiting down the road,” he continued.

What Do Eric Church’s “On The Road” Lyrics Mean?

As the song continues, Eric turns his attention toward his own legacy and what will happen when his time on the road eventually comes to an end.

He reflects on how quickly his career has seemingly passed before imagining a future in which he’s “just a name on a wall” and another musician takes his place.

The final chorus shifts perspective to that next artist, continuing the cycle of musicians traveling from town to town with their guitars and chasing the same dream.

“On The Road” is available to stream now.
