Eight Video Game Adaptations Fans Can’t Wait For

upcoming video – From The Angry Birds Movie 3 to Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil, eight major video game adaptations are set for upcoming releases—with big casts, familiar worlds, and new hopes riding on the next wave of big-screen storytelling.
The stakes for video game adaptations have never felt higher—or more personal. After years when fans watched beloved worlds get flattened into something forgettable, the next lineup looks built for the people who actually play the games.
Eight projects now stand out as fan-facing bets: major sequels returning to screens. and fresh attempts to bring acclaimed games to life with a tone and care that feels closer to the original. With release dates spread across 2026. 2027. and 2028. the question for audiences isn’t just whether these movies will entertain—it’s whether they’ll respect the worlds that inspired them.
December 23rd. 2026 brings The Angry Birds Movie 3 back to cinemas after The Angry Birds Movie 2 proved itself as a surprise fan-favorite. The sequel is set to lean into the same lighthearted approach the earlier films used. mixing kid-friendly comedy with characters and elements from the games. Excitement also comes from the creative return of director John Rice and Thurop Van Orman. creator of The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack. as the team looks to continue the strengths of the previous film.
The voice cast is one of the biggest sparks around the movie: Keke Palmer, Tim Robinson, Emma Myers, Walker Scobell, Sam Richardson, and even Mr. Beast are all attached.
July 23rd. 2026 marks the release of A Minecraft Sequel. coming after last year’s A Minecraft Movie became an inescapable phenomenon. The first film didn’t just perform well inside the video game audience—it grossed almost a billion dollars and pulled children around the world into its strange. meme-fueled charm. With a sequel already in the works. fans are expecting the kind of wild chaos that made the original a runaway hit.
What’s known so far points toward more direct appeal to the Minecraft audience. Kirsten Dunst is set to play Alex. and the sequel is positioned to explore parts of the Minecraft world that weren’t tapped in the previous film. including additional biomes and mobs. As for the vibe. the movie will likely need to keep that signature energy—especially if Jack Black continues to “yell out Minecraft terms” in increasingly over-the-top fashion.
November 10th, 2027 is when Helldivers arrives on the big screen, with Helldivers 2’s popularity pushing the franchise forward. The co-op success of the game helped it become one of the defining co-op experiences of the past few years. and after Sony’s other video game adaptations in Uncharted and The Last of Us. a Helldivers movie was quickly greenlit to capitalize on that momentum.
The pitch for the film leans hard into explosive sci-fi action. and the games’ influence is clear even in the way they draw inspiration from Starship Troopers. including overt authoritarian satire. The attached talent is the part that may raise expectations even further: Jason Momoa is set to be in a leading role. and the film will be helmed by Justin Lin. director of the Fast and Furious franchise. Lin previously directed a high-budget sci-fi blockbuster with Star Trek Beyond. putting him in the kind of wheelhouse this adaptation would need to match the games’ wild energy.
October 16th. 2026 offers Street Fighter. a new attempt at bringing the fighting game series to the big screen in this latest wave of video game adaptation fervor. Street Fighter already had cult classic success with a 90s-era movie. but the new film went through a wide array of developmental changes. including swaps in directors and writers. Still. it’s now set to release later this year. and the excitement is being fueled by the trailer. which ramps up anticipation for the World Warrior Tournament.
Visually. fans are expecting accuracy and energy: the film is working to present each member of the Street Fighter cast as accurately as possible. alongside dynamic action and frequent references to the classic games. The release also comes after Mortal Kombat II surprised fans with a delivery of strengths from the games—placing even more pressure on Street Fighter to land.
March 19th, 2027 is the date for Sonic the Hedgehog 4, with attention sharpened by how Sonic films improved over time. The earlier movies gained confidence with humor and a growing appreciation for the games and their story. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is expected to build on that momentum. especially since the previous film ended with major cliffhanger post-credits scenes.
Confirmed new characters include Amy Rose (Kristen Bell) and Metal Sonic. Many fans are already speculating that the movie could follow a plot of time travel and alternate dimensions similar to Amy and Metal’s debut game. Sonic CD. Some fans also believe Metal Sonic could come from a universe where Robotnik defeated Sonic and achieved total world domination. Beyond that. casting additions have intensified speculation: Ben Kingsley. Nick Offerman. Matt Berry. and Richard Atoade are among the names driving guesses about who they may play.
March 3rd, 2028 brings Elden Ring into the adaptation spotlight, and expectations are understandably high. Elden Ring has become a modern cultural heavyweight with lore and dynamic storytelling, combining the narrative strengths of George R. R. Martin and Hidetaka Miyazaki into one of FromSoftware’s greatest achievements. A film adaptation isn’t a surprise—but the scale of ambition is.
Elden Ring is being spearheaded by Alex Garland and released by A24. The project is positioned as an unusually faithful and intricate adaptation. leaning into the deep mythos of the game and aiming for a true cinematic expansion of the world and characters. Garland’s involvement is part of the reason people are watching closely: he has recently directed Civil War and Warfare. and he has writing credits tied to the 28 Years Later films. A24’s approach also factors in. since the studio has prided itself on giving filmmakers more control and expression. allowing Garland—who has revealed he’s on his seventh playthrough of the game—to deliver a love letter to fans and something that understands the beauty and brilliance of Elden Ring.
April 30th. 2027 is the release date for The Legend of Zelda. a franchise that has long lived as a decades-long dream for feature-length film audiences. The movie adaptation has been generating hype since it was announced. with fans focused on the little that’s been revealed and waiting for more. That wait is set to tighten as the major lead casting has been announced.
Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will play Link, and Bo Bragason will play Zelda. The film’s director is Wes Ball, described as a long-time Zelda fan who has wanted to make this film for over a decade. Ball also recently had success with an adventure movie in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
And then there’s September 18th. 2026—Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil—positioned as the biggest confidence swing in the lineup for fans who feel burned by what came before. Some audiences have been hesitant because of the lackluster quality of previous adaptations and the lack of iconic characters in this new film. But the project is being framed as the safest and easiest bet for overwhelmingly high quality.
Cregger’s Resident Evil is expected to pivot toward horror in the style of the classic games. rather than leaning primarily into action. Previous Resident Evil film adaptations focused more on action. which may have been fun in short bursts but didn’t hold the same memory as the series’ core horror identity. This time. the film isn’t featuring fan-favorite characters like Chris Redfield or Leon Kennedy. yet it’s being described as taking steps to be inspired by the tone and gameplay of Resident Evil in its filmmaking. The aim is an original story rooted in the franchise’s strengths of tone and style.
Cregger’s track record is part of why fans are hopeful. He created horror films Barbarian and Weapons in recent years, and that work has people expecting his Resident Evil to match that craft.
All eight releases share one underlying theme: after a long stretch of adaptations that didn’t land, the next wave is arriving with enough dates, talent, and world-building clues to make audiences feel like their patience might finally be rewarded.

If they mess up Resident Evil again I’m done lol.
Angry Birds Movie 3 in 2026?? That’s wild. I didn’t even know people still cared like that. Hopefully they keep it kid-friendly and not some weird serious plot or whatever.
Wait so Zach Cregger is doing Resident Evil… isn’t he like from comedy stuff? I mean that could be good but also seems random, like they’re just trying to make it like a parody. Also I’m pretty sure Resident Evil already had a movie with him? maybe I’m mixing him up with somebody else.
I swear every time they do a video game movie it’s the same thing—pretty graphics, zero soul. They say 2026-2028 and “respect the worlds” but I’ll believe it when I see it. Like do we even know which ones are actually sequels vs “new attempts”?? feels like marketing talk, but I’m still gonna watch Angry Birds 3 just because December 23rd is easy to remember.
