A half-million partygoers are expected to flood Southern Nevada this weekend, and with them comes a sharp warning for drivers: Interstate 15 is likely to feel the pressure.
More than 500. 000 revelers are expected to attend the Electric Daisy Carnival at Las Vegas Motor Speedway from Friday through Sunday. a surge that could significantly increase congestion across key corridors.. The Nevada Department of Transportation says it will use intermittent traffic restrictions and shifting traffic patterns around I-15 to help manage the inflow and movement of event-goers.
To reduce the odds of getting stuck in gridlock. NDOT is urging drivers to plan routes in advance and to build in extra time each day of the event.. The message is straightforward: delays are not limited to a single stretch. and travel times may fluctuate as traffic patterns adjust around EDC operations.
Early in the week. crews will perform temporary shoulder restriping on I-15 northbound between the Tropical Parkway and Speedway Boulevard off-ramps. scheduled between 9 p.m.. Tuesday and 5:30 a.m.. Wednesday.. NDOT cautioned that even routine work can alter traffic flow. and drivers should expect changes in how lanes and shoulders are used during that window.
A separate restriping activity is also planned around Las Vegas Boulevard. on the southbound lanes between Sloan Lane and Hollywood Boulevard.. This work is tied to the same overall effort to keep traffic moving as event demand ramps up. but it will still require drivers to navigate altered traffic patterns and proceed with added caution.
On Wednesday night. NDOT expects more substantial disruption connected to EDC operations. particularly around the route leading toward major parade activity.. Between 5 and 11:30 p.m.. Wednesday. the I-15 southbound off-ramp to Sahara Avenue eastbound will be closed. and the Sahara south bridge near Las Vegas Boulevard will also close for the EDC World Parade.
The parade itself is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.. Friday and is described as a free event expected to last about 2 1/2 hours.. The route begins at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds. then proceeds around the North Strip. passing Circus Circus. Resorts World. Fontainebleau and Sahara Las Vegas. before ending as the procession concludes.. Those closures and pre-parade restrictions are designed to clear the way for the parade route and associated street management.
As EDC weekend continues, traffic changes will extend beyond the main interstate stretches.. From 1 p.m.. Friday until 10 a.m.. Sunday. NDOT expects altered traffic patterns on I-15 northbound near Exit 52. Exit 54. and Exit 58 (Apex) during the event days at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.. The agency also flagged impacts on Las Vegas Boulevard between Nellis Boulevard and Apex. along with Craig Road between Nellis and Las Vegas Boulevard.
Officials say the heaviest delays are most likely between 2 p.m.. and 6 a.m.. each day of EDC.. That timing matters for commuters and weekend travelers alike. because it overlaps both the late-afternoon arrival period and the late-night/early-morning movement of attendees leaving or shifting between venues.
For drivers, the practical impact is that navigation apps and typical routines may not reflect the changing road configurations.. Even when lane counts remain the same. closures of specific ramps or bridges can force longer detours onto parallel routes like Las Vegas Boulevard and Craig Road. magnifying congestion in surrounding areas.
This kind of event-driven traffic planning also has a ripple effect on adjacent travel corridors: restriping and ramp closures can create brief bottlenecks. while parade-related shutdowns can reshape movement across the region for multiple days.. NDOT’s staggered schedule—from restriping earlier in the week to parade closures and then longer-lasting shifts during the event—reflects how operational needs build as the festival progresses.
