Ed Sheeran’s touring company announced Friday morning that it is canceling his Gillette stadium shows this weekend due to the forecasted severe weather.
Hours before Sheeran’s scheduled show Friday, Messina Touring announced in a post on social media that they decided to cancel the Friday and Saturday shows due to the nor’easter set to hit the region this weekend.
“The decision was made with the safety of fans, staff and everyone involved in the shows as the top priority,” the touring company said.
Messina Touring said refunds are now available at the point of purchase, and ticket-holders who purchased through Ticketmaster will be automatically refunded.
The decision to cancel the Gillette shows comes amid heightened controversy around Sheeran’s tour.
On Sept. 14, Macklemore announced he was removed as Sheeran’s opening act for making pro-Palestinian remarks during a Sept. 5 concert in New Jersey. Macklemore has said his removal was the result of an effort led by Patriots owner Robert Kraft.
After Sheeran posted on social media Sept. 15 attributing Macklemore’s removal to the decision of tour promoters, the rest of his scheduled opening acts announced they were also leaving the tour.
The nonprofit Massachusetts Peace Action had been planning to hold a protest from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday ahead of Sheeran’s scheduled 5:30 p.m. performance.
