President Donald Trump declared he is unleashing the “MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION” in history against Iran on Wednesday — a move he suggested will deliver a knockout blow to the country and force it to finally agree to end the war and never pursue a nuclear weapon.
The president dubbed the plan “ECONOMIC D-DAY!” in a lengthy Truth Social post which was light on details.
One thing Trump did make clear: he will financially target “ANY” countries helping Iran circumvent sanctions slapped on it by the USA. He said he had no choice but to tighten the economic vice on Iran after it “TRAGICALLY” failed to strike a deal to end the war.
Trump posted:
No one has given the Islamic Republic of Iran a greater opportunity to make a Deal than me. TRAGICALLY, for them, they have failed to take it. Therefore, today, I am announcing the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY! This will be Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale.
Their navy is gone, their air force is destroyed, their military factories are now rubble, their currency is worthless, and their country is hanging by a thread.
Today, I am also announcing that ANY country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences. Oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, front companies — It all needs to stop NOW. You know who you are.
He finished the post by writing, “This will be an ECONOMIC D-DAY, and we need all of our Allies to stand with the United States of America to isolate, and defeat, the Iran threat. These maniacs are on the ropes, and these HISTORIC MEASURES will cripple them and their ability to project terror worldwide. IRAN WILL NEVER HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER.”
The post comes 178 days after the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran and launched the war. It has since stopped and started a handful of times, and Trump has said several times a deal was or near completion, including earlier this month when he said an agreement was “imminent.”
Whatever near-deal there was appears to have completely evaporated in the weeks since then, though.
Trump’s son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner told Fox News on Monday the Iranians were looking to “finish the deal” — only for Trump to contradict him a day later and say the talks were dead.
