Dutton Ranch Stars Respond as Showrunner Exit Hits

Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser addressed a major shakeup behind Dutton Ranch, after showrunner Chad Feehan stepped away ahead of the Paramount+ spinoff’s run. Feehan’s departure was tied to alleged friction on set, even as the leads urged viewers to focus on wha

The shakeup landed quietly at first, then became impossible to ignore: Chad Feehan was in charge of the Yellowstone spinoff shortly before it premiered in June, and not long after, he was confirmed to be stepping away from the showrunner role.

Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, who play the Dutton Ranch couple, finally broke their silence on the changes. In a joint interview. Hauser. 51. said. “Showrunners change all the time.” He added. “This business is about adapting. ” then looked at the bigger picture: “We’ve been doing this for a long time. Things change. People move on.”.

Reilly, 48, echoed the same mindset, pointing to the work that was completed. “We finished [season one] with Chad beautifully. We finished this season together. It was a really difficult but really satisfying show to make. And so was Yellowstone.”

For Reilly, the emphasis is still on the craft—and the people in the room. “So is anything worth making,” she said, concluding, “We’re all creative minds and we all work together and I’m so proud of that.”

That pride matters, because Feehan’s exit didn’t arrive as a simple behind-the-scenes reshuffle. An April report said Feehan. the producer who created Lawmen: Bass Reeves with creator Taylor Sheridan. stepped away from Dutton Ranch after alleged friction with series stars Hauser and Reilly. among others. The same reporting suggested Sheridan and his producing partner David Glasser. along with the two leads. were reportedly more unhappy with how Feehan ran the production than with the scripts.

Executive producer Christina Voros later addressed Feehan’s reported firing in May. She told ScreenRant that he did “an exceptional job building a world of adversaries for Rip and Beth” in the Yellowstone spinoff. When it came to “dynamics behind his departure. ” Voros said she didn’t have much more to add. explaining that Dutton Ranch had not “come out into the world yet. ” so a future without Feehan was “beyond” her knowledge at that point. She also expressed gratitude for “creating a world for these characters to move into.”.

Paramount+ has since renewed Dutton Ranch for season 2, but there hasn’t been a showrunner update yet.

The situation also fits a wider pattern in Sheridan’s TV universe. Lioness. Tulsa King. and Frisco King have all experienced showrunner changes. and not every Sheridan show has shifted season to season. For now. Dutton Ranch airs on Paramount+ Fridays. with Reilly and Hauser asking viewers to look past the personnel upheaval and focus on what’s already been built—together.
