Duran heckles back, Yankees fan escorted after outburst

Jarren Duran’s brief clash with a heckling Yankees fan during the eighth inning of the Red Sox’s 4-1 win at Fenway Park turned physical only in the way the dugout intervened—after teammates moved him down into the dugout. Duran said “nothing happened,” and the

Fenway Park had barely settled after Jarren Duran’s at-bat when the eighth inning started sounding different.

After Duran grounded out and returned to the dugout, he appeared to shout at a man seated about eight rows behind the dugout. The man had been “chirping” for several innings, interim manager Chad Tracy said.

Teammates stepped in quickly. Several got in front of Duran and brought him down into the dugout.

Willson Contreras described what he saw and what he did. “He was yelling, so I grabbed him [to diffuse the situation],” Contreras said.

When asked about the exchange, Duran repeatedly said “nothing happened.”

The fan—wearing a Yankees cap and, according to an eyewitness, yelling about baseball matters—was escorted without incident out of the park during the top of the ninth inning.

Tracy said it is not disappointing that Duran reacted that way. Why? “Just not,” Tracy said.

The moment landed in a season already familiar to Duran’s critics. Duran has a history of angry in-game interactions with fans. including in Minnesota in April. when he flipped off a group of Twins fans. After that incident, Duran claimed someone told him he should kill himself. The Twins investigated the episode by speaking to a half-dozen people in the immediate vicinity. and found no evidence of that.

The sequence at Fenway was different in scale—the dugout physically intervened, and the fan was removed without incident—but it followed the same immediate trigger: repeated heckling and a visible reaction from Duran in the middle of a tight, high-attention rivalry moment.

The Red Sox still won 4-1 over the Yankees, but the eighth-inning exchange lingered after the final out.
