Duffer Brothers’ Netflix hit climbs after May 21 debut

The Boroughs – Netflix’s latest eight-part sci-fi series from the Duffer Brothers has surged through viewership charts since its May 21, 2026 debut—while the team’s rapidly expanding production push points toward major industry shifts ahead.
A new Duffer Brothers series didn’t just arrive on Netflix—it hit the ground running.
The streamer’s latest eight-part sci-fi entry, “The Boroughs,” opened to excellent reviews on May 21, 2026, and is already sitting at a “Certified Fresh” 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The show follows a group of retirees who have to band together to take down a mysterious threat.
Executive production is coming from the Duffer Brothers. the creators behind Netflix’s flagship hit “Stranger Things.” The duo have also spent recent months pushing their output through Upside Down Pictures—after bringing “Stranger Things” to a close at the end of 2025. they’ve exec-produced three series in three months.
Now “The Boroughs” is stacking up strong early momentum. It stars Alfred Molina, Bill Pullman, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Clarke Peters, and Jena Malone, among others.
On the viewership front, FlixPatrol lists “The Boroughs” among the top five shows on Netflix globally in the days after its debut. Domestically, the series is currently at the number two spot behind the crime drama “Nemesis.”
The timing is striking: Netflix is still drawing the benefit of its long-running partnership with the Duffers, including recent projects. In March, the Duffer Brothers exec-produced the horror series “Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen,” created by Haley Z. Boston and starring Camila Morrone. That eight-episode show drew positive reviews and remained a regular fixture on Netflix viewership charts in the days following its release. In April. they backed the animated spin-off series “Stranger Things: Tales from ’85. ” signaling Netflix’s continued interest in expanding the franchise.
At the same time, the Duffers’ next move outside Netflix is already in motion. After their run on “Stranger Things” ends and their flurry of Upside Down Pictures releases continues, they’re set to begin a new creative partnership with Paramount—one that would allow them to make theatrical movies.
That shift carries consequences for another major player. Paramount is poised to lose Taylor Sheridan to NBCUniversal, and the studio is described as being at an opportune moment for the Duffers’ move.
Even with all the industry chess pieces shifting behind the scenes, “The Boroughs” is what audiences are watching right now—retirees, a mysterious threat, and a debut that’s already turning into a ratings storyline of its own.
