Don’t eat this pistachio nut butter sold at Walmart. It could make you very sick

There has been no shortage of recalls linked to possible Salmonella contamination recently, and, unfortunately, consumers need to be aware of yet another one.

This recall involves a nut butter product sold exclusively at Walmart stores in 19 states. Here’s what you need to know.

What’s happened?

On August 3, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a recall notice warning of possible Salmonella contamination affecting a pistachio nut butter product sold at Walmart stores.

The product, manufactured by Gustibus Alimentari Srl of Assoro, Italy, and imported by Boticelli Foods, was sold under the brand name Bettergoods.

According to the FDA notice, the recall was initiated after Walmart learned that, on July 17, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) tested three jars of the nut butter from a Walmart retail store and detected Salmonella in the samples.

What is Salmonella?

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause illness and, in severe cases, death in individuals who consume it, which usually happens when the food they are eating is contaminated with the organism.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a Salmonella infection can present with an array of symptoms. The most common are stomach cramps and watery diarrhea that may have blood or mucus.

However, some individuals may also experience the following symptoms:

• Headache
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Loss of appetite

While anyone can get a Salmonella infection, the groups most at risk include individuals with weakened immune systems, children younger than 5, adults 65 or older, and adults 50 or older with underlying medical problems.

What products are being recalled?

According to the notice posted on the FDA’s website, only one product is included in the recall:

• Brand Name: Bettergoods
• Product: Pistachio Nut Butter
• NET WT: 6.7oz (190g)
• UPC: 194346207961
• Lot: LB028ACP04
• Expiration date: January 28, 2027

The recall notice says that “No other lots of bettergoods Pistachio Nut Butter are subject to this recall.”

Where was the recalled product sold?

The recall notice states that the recalled pistachio nut butter was distributed exclusively through Walmart stores. Bettergoods is a private label for “elevated culinary experiences” that Walmart launched in 2024. The product was sold in the following 19 states:

What should I do if I have the recalled product?

Consumers who have the recalled product in their possession are urged not to consume it.

Instead, they should take the product back to its place of purchase for a refund.
