Donald Trump talks about his tresses during RNC midterm convention speech: ‘I’m not happy with it’
President Donald Trump paused his speech at the Republican National Committee’s midterm convention in Dallas to comment on his hair after noticing some skin showing on the back of his head.
Trump glanced at a large video screen showing a live feed of himself and took issue with how his hair looked.
Trump’s self-deprecating comments
“I gotta do a little bit better in the back right there,” Trump told the crowd of party activists, donors and supporters.
“I don’t like that little skin that’s showing, I’m not happy with it,” he continued. “That’s not good. I shouldn’t have looked up there.”
Footage of the moment showed Trump reaching toward his hair as some members of the audience laughed.
A wig denial at the White House
The Dallas remarks came about a week after Trump brought up longstanding speculation about his hair during a dinner with Republican lawmakers in the White House Rose Garden and denied wearing a wig.
Trump recalled attending a 2024 campaign rally for Republican Sen. Bernie Moreno of Ohio, describing the wind-whipped airfield in Vandalia, Ohio, as one of the worst conditions he had experienced.
“I went up to the speaker and it was blowing so hard,” Trump told the audience. “You know, for years, I had to suffer with people saying, ‘He wears a wig.’ I don’t wear a wig. But that night, they found out I did not wear a wig because if you did, it was not going to be on your head very long.”
Trump said teleprompters were blown off the stage during the rally.
A new hairstyle sparks speculation
Two days after the Rose Garden remarks, Trump appeared with a noticeably different hairstyle. After landing at Morristown Municipal Airport in New Jersey ahead of a weekend at his golf club in Bedminster, he stepped off Air Force One with darker hair and his usual part on the opposite side.
The change prompted speculation online about whether Trump had altered his hairstyle or was using a hairpiece.
Trump golfed at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster the following day with Fox News anchor Bret Baier, National Intelligence Director Jay Clayton and others. His hair was mostly covered by a red “Trump was right about everything” cap, according to the New York Post.
Biographer describes a traveling ‘patch kit’
The hairstyle change and wig denial were followed by a claim from longtime Trump biographer Michael Wolff, who said the president has a traveling kit he uses to address thinning areas of his hair.
On the September 5 episode of the “Inside Trump’s Head” podcast, which Wolff co-hosts with Joanna Coles, the biographer said Trump “has somebody who’s following and there have been a couple of people over — certainly over the political years — who’ve carried the patch kit. They are next to the people who carry the nuclear codes.”
Wolff said the kit contains small tufts of hair matched to Trump’s current hair color that are attached with “some kind of paste.”
Wolff also claimed that Trump has personally overseen much of his hair maintenance and that the practice dates back to at least his first presidential term.
Trump’s hair has been the subject of public discussion for decades.
During his 2015 presidential campaign, Trump addressed speculation about his hair at a rally, saying, “I don’t wear a toupee; it’s my hair, I swear,” before inviting a woman onstage to confirm it was real. Ahead of the 2016 election, he also allowed television host Jimmy Fallon to tousle his hair on air.
