Dolan urged Knicks families to sacrifice for title

As New York Knicks moved into a championship run, owner James Dolan told the team on April 3 that winning would demand sacrifice not just from players, but from their families at home—down to buying rings for significant others if the club finished the job.

The Knicks’ championship run didn’t start with a trophy. It started, according to owner James Dolan, with a conversation that reached past the arena and into living rooms.

On April 3, Dolan delivered a remarks speech to the team that was made public on Monday, after it was released on “The Roommates Show,” a podcast hosted by Knicks players Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart. The speech was Dolan’s first direct message to the team during his tenure with the franchise.

“I believe that this team can go all the way. And in my 30 years of doing this, I’ve never felt closer to achieving that goal than right now,” Dolan said.

From there, Dolan pressed the players for full commitment—explicitly involving the people they go home to. He challenged them to “sacrifice everything” and “eliminate all distractions,” including those at home.

“I suggest that you go home and you talk to your families, you talk to your girlfriends, your wives, and you tell them about the next 10 weeks — about how you’re going to be different the next 10 weeks, and how your families are going to sacrifice for the next 10 weeks,” Dolan said.

He also told players to make sure any concerns or problems that surfaced outside basketball wouldn’t spill onto the court. “Any concerns or problems at home can’t come onto the court,” he added. “For the next 10 weeks, this has just got to be all about us and about how we play.”

Dolan didn’t frame those demands as one-sided. He said the sacrifices made by players’ families would be recognized—promising that loved ones would receive championship rings if the Knicks won it all.

“I will buy a ring for each one of your significant others, because their contribution is going to be very important to this team winning,” Dolan said.

The promise arrived as the Knicks entered the stretch that ended their 53-year championship drought. On Saturday, the team defeated the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the NBA Finals.

Thursday is set to bring a public celebration: the Knicks plan a ticker-tape parade through Lower Manhattan’s “Canyon of Heroes.” Demand for prime viewing spots has been so intense that some people have begun offering spot-holding services for a fee.

Off the court, Dolan’s financial position has also strengthened. The remarks land during a year in which his net worth has grown by roughly $450 million to $1.9 billion, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index.

  1. Buying rings for significant others?? That’s kinda sweet but also weirdly intense like it’s a whole family contract. I don’t even like my own schedule being like that.

  2. Wait so Dolan wanted the wives to not have problems at home on the court… so like he’s blaming the family for a bad game? That seems backwards. Also I saw a clip on TikTok where it sounded like they had to like, sacrifice money, not just time.

  3. This sounds like the Knicks are one step away from making a team “opt out” form for your own life. Next they’ll be asking permission from your landlord or something. And the ring for girlfriends thing… I mean, if they win, sure, but saying it out loud like that is cringe. Also ticker tape parade already? People selling spot-holding services?? New York gonna New York I guess.
