Does Rudy Pankow Return as JJ in ‘Outer Banks’ Season 5? Why the Creators Didn’t Invite Him Back

Rudy Pankow does NOT return for the fifth and final season of Outer Banks and the creators of the show are explaining why they did not invite him back to wrap up the series.
Rudy‘s character JJ Maybank was killed off at the end of season four, but fans were hoping that he’d return in flashbacks.
While JJ does appear in flashbacks in the fifth season, the character appears in his younger years with another actor portraying the role. Rudy did not come back.
Why Rudy Pankow didn’t return for the final season
Series co-creator Shannon Burke confirmed to Deadline that there was “no consideration” to bring JJ back for the final season. She said, “Not in any corporeal, like not as a real person, but maybe in a dream sequence, sort of as it was.”
Series co-creator Josh Pate explained why there wasn’t a conversation to bring Rudy back.
“Honestly, not really. We always knew we wanted to show when they first met. I don’t know, maybe glancingly, but it never got very serious,” he told Deadline, referring to JJ and Kiara.
Rudy Pankow still supports the show despite his exit
Rudy confirmed that he planned on watching the final season.
“I’m totally going to watch it,” he said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast in March 2026. “I want to see how they do it. I really want to. And they’re going to crush it. No doubt.”
