DNC chair releases “autopsy” for 2024 loss, then undercuts it

DNC releases – DNC Chairman Ken Martin apologized after releasing a 192-page election “autopsy” document that he said was kept from public view because it “wasn’t ready for prime time.” The report argues Democrats lost touch with everyday Americans after the 2008 Obama wave,
When the DNC chairman walked through the decision to publish a report he had long held back, it came with an unusual admission: Ken Martin apologized for creating “a distraction” by not releasing it sooner, even as he moved forward Thursday.
Martin said the document—described by supporters and critics as a 2024 election “autopsy”—was in his possession since last year. but it “wasn’t ready for prime time — not even close.” He still chose to release it “as we received it. in its entirety. unedited and unabridged. ” Martin said. arguing people “need to be able to trust the Democratic Party and trust our word.”.
He also cautioned that it “does not meet my standards, and it won’t meet your standards…”
The political scramble around that publication had been building for weeks. Martin had appeared on a left-leaning podcast. where hosts repeatedly pressed him about whether the report existed and when it might be released. At the time. Democrats close to the party suggested releasing it would be unproductive as they prepared for the midterms. and at least one questioned whether it even existed—an idea also noted by the outlet that published the 192-page document before Martin announced his plan.
In the released version. the report makes its most sweeping case in the way it ties the party’s 2024 outcome to an older pattern. It faults Democrats for losing touch with voters after the ascendency of Barack Obama to the White House nearly two decades ago. saying: “Since the high point of the 2008 Obama landslide. when he received nearly 10 million more votes than John McCain. the Democratic Party has vacillated between stagnation and retrogression.”.
The document adds that Democrats “have lost the confidence we once received from everyday Americans – and election results show it.” It goes further, saying that in “the sixteen tumultuous years since that historic election,” Democrats “have lost ground at every level of government.”
It is also sharply critical of the Biden White House’s approach to Vice President Kamala Harris before what the report calls the “candidate switch.” The document argues: “The national campaign did not effectively drive Trump’s negatives. and the White House did not effectively support Vice President Harris over three and a half years to improve her standing before the candidate switch.”.
But the public release also includes a hard counterweight. An annotation in the publicly released version states of this particular analysis: “No evidence provided for these claims.” Martin’s own words—his insistence that it was being released unedited. and his warning that it falls short of his standards—have now placed the party’s internal scrutiny directly on a political stage where every line can be attacked.
Republicans quickly seized on the report’s publication and the internal tension it revealed. The report arrives after Donald Trump won a string of electoral victories in Indiana, Louisiana and Kentucky, backing challengers who ousted incumbents who had opposed elements of the president’s agenda.
Kiersten Pels. national press secretary for the Republican National Committee. said the release of the report was another misstep by people who oppose the president. In a statement. Pels said. “The Democrat Party has completely collapsed after getting humiliated in 2024. ” adding that Martin is now “admitting Democrats turned their own so-called ‘autopsy’ into an embarrassing political circus.” She charged that Democrats “spent months leaking. infighting. blaming each other. and flooding DNC leadership with angry demands for answers after voters overwhelmingly rejected their toxic far-left agenda and weak leadership.”.
National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Mike Marinella offered a second rebuke. In his statement. he said. “Democrats keep stepping on the same rake and seem genuinely surprised when it smacks them in the face. ” and added that “Americans have made it pretty clear they’re tired of radical social experiments and out of touch priorities.”.
For Democrats, the response has been more cautious and uneven—at least publicly. One Democratic operative, reached for comment Thursday, said only that it will be “interesting” to see which officials are willing to comment on the report.
The sequence of events—weeks of speculation about whether the document existed. a 192-page report landing in public view. and then Martin’s decision to release it in full while saying it does not meet his standards—leaves the party facing a question that now can’t be managed quietly: whether the autopsy is meant to heal. or whether it is now functioning as just another weapon in the partisan fight after the loss.
