Djokovic eliminated by Joao Fonseca in French Open

Djokovic eliminated – Novak Djokovic is out of the 2026 French Open after losing to Brazilian teen Joao Fonseca in the men’s singles third round in Paris on May 29. The defeat comes after another major upset earlier in the tournament and leaves no Grand Slam men’s winners remaining
Novak Djokovic walked off the court at Roland Garros with a result that will sting for longer than the scoreline suggests.
The 39-year-old World No. 4 lost to 19-year-old Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca, ranked No. 30 in the world, on Friday (May 29) during the men’s singles third round match on Day Six of the 2026 French Open in Paris, France. Djokovic fell 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5.
It wasn’t just a tough loss—it was the latest shock in a tournament that has started to feel unpredictable at every turn. Djokovic’s elimination follows Jannik Sinner’s surprising defeat. The 24-year-old player, ranked No. 1 in the world, lost to Juan Manuel Cerundolo on Day 5 on Thursday (May 28).
By the time Fonseca finished the job, the draw had already been stripped of its usual safety net. There are no men’s Grand Slam winners left in the draw.
Fonseca’s performance landed with force. but it was his reaction afterward that captured the disbelief of how quickly everything can change in Paris. “I just enjoyed being on court and what a pleasure it was. It’s my first stepping on court against him. I was just trying to hit the ball as fast I could. Djokovic don’t miss, we still think he’s 20. At the end of the match I think he was more fit than me. that’s crazy. ” Fonseca said via ESPN.
Then he added a joke that sounded like the kind of moment you can’t plan for. “I felt like [big server] John Isner. I never did this before.”
The upset also sits alongside Fonseca’s place in the larger story of the French Open’s momentum. With Djokovic gone and Sinner previously out. the tournament is now open in a way that few people would have predicted before the Day Six matches began—especially with the memory of last month’s champions still fresh. Carlos Alcaraz. who won the Australian Open tennis tournament in February at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena during a four-set thriller against Novak. is now part of a men’s draw that—after Friday’s result—no longer contains any Grand Slam winners.
