Kevin Gausman, a recent trade acquisition for the Cubs, has a longstanding connection to Alex Bregman beyond their LSU ties.
The Chicago Cubs acquired Kevin Gausman at the trade deadline to provide some much-needed help to their ailing starting rotation. Gausman, in six starts thus far for the Cubs, has an ERA of 4.37 across 35.0 innings of work, but it’s his reliability and durability that the Cubs need anyway as they come closer and closer to sealing their spot in the 2026 MLB postseason.
However, not too many people know that Gausman shares some fascinating history with Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman, both of whom are LSU alums. All the way back in 2012, before Gausman was swooped up by the Baltimore Orioles in the MLB Draft, the now 36-year-old pitcher, who was only 22 back then, hosted Bregman on a recruiting visit — promptly showing him what a good time in the university looked like.
“We showed them a good time, that’s for sure,” Gausman said, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
Gausman’s first impression of Bregman was that he’s “pretty reckless”, although that is to be expected of someone who was just around 18 years of age at the time.
Bregman’s first visit at LSU must have been wild, although according to Rosenthal, the Cubs third baseman does not remember what exactly happened during his first time meeting with Gausman.
The two, of course, did not play together in LSU. Gausman left when the Orioles drafted him in 2012, while Bregman’s college career began that same year before he became the second overall pick of the 2015 MLB Draft.
At the very least, there is some hidden chemistry between Gausman and Bregman, both of whom are at least known how to celebrate and enjoy their time. They are hoping that they do plenty of celebrating for the Cubs with the postseason approaching, as they will be aiming to compete for a World Series title.
Right now, the Cubs are locked into another three-game series against the Brewers, which they already lost after dropping the first two games by the same score line, 4-3.
