Diamondbacks’ Ketel Marte sets record straight on gesture before first game back
Arizona Diamondbacks star Ketel Marte had some explaining to do both before and after his first game back from injury.
The Arizona Diamondbacks welcomed Ketel Marte back into the fold on Monday night. Marte took the field for the first time since no-showing a game against the Boston Red Sox last week. He was activated off the injury list on Monday ahead of a game against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Prior to the game, Marte addressed his teammates about his decision to no-show the game against Boston. He was also given the chance to send a message to fans during his pre-game media availability. He declined this chance, which caused a stir online. The Diamondbacks star took time to clear the air following the Phillies game.
“Going back to the press conference, when the question was asked, I didn’t really quite understand the word that was used,” Marte said through an interpreter, via Arizona Sports. “I’m never going to stop loving my fans and that’s what I want them to understand.”
Marte did contribute on Monday against the Phillies. He drew a walk in the sixth inning and recorded a single in the eighth inning as Arizona attempted a comeback. Unfortunately, the Diamondbacks fell short, losing to Philadelphia by a score of 2-1.
The Diamondbacks fell to 73-66 on the season. Arizona is in the thick of the Wild Card race at this time. In fact, they are just half a game back of the Chicago Cubs for the final Wild Card spot in the National League.
Wins will become increasingly important now that the 2026 season is entering its final month. The Diamondbacks will look to claim their first win of September on Tuesday night against the Phillies.
