Detroit Public Schools announces 3-hour early release due to heat Tuesday, Wednesday

DETROIT – Detroit Public Schools Community District students will be dismissed three hours early because of expected high temperatures, the district announced Monday.

The early release will take effect Tuesday, Sept. 1, and Wednesday, Sept 2, DPSCD announced Monday (Aug. 31).

DPSCD said afternoon Career Technical Education classes will be canceled both days as part of the schedule change.

Individual schools will decide about after-school activities, athletics, and other extracurricular programs.

Families should contact their schools directly for information about whether those activities will continue.

The early dismissal applies to students and school-based staff.

It does not apply to employees working in the district’s Central Office.

The decision comes as Southeast Michigan prepares for temperatures near 90 degrees Tuesday and in the lower 90s Wednesday, with high humidity potentially pushing heat index values toward 100 degrees.

DPSCD encouraged families and staff to plan accordingly as the district takes precautions during the period of extreme heat.
