By the time New York’s winter travel crowds start to build, Delta wants to offer a shortcut to Costa Rica’s shoreline.

The Atlanta-based carrier has filed plans to launch nonstop service from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport (LIR) in Liberia, Costa Rica. LIR sits in northwest Costa Rica and serves as a gateway to the Guanacaste region. where many travelers aim to spend their beach days.

Delta’s New York to Guanacaste route is set to launch Dec. 19. Flights will operate once per week during the winter season, running on Saturdays, and are scheduled to continue into the spring of 2027. The seasonal service will end April 10. For the trip, Delta will use one of its Airbus A321neos.

It’s not a completely new chapter for Delta in Costa Rica. The airline already serves Liberia from its Atlanta, Boston, Detroit and Minneapolis hubs. Delta also previously operated JFK–LIR service about a decade ago, in 2016. What’s changing now is the timing for travelers in the New York market: Delta currently does not offer any Costa Rica service from New York City. making this new nonstop connection a more direct option for a warm-weather getaway during the winter.

LIR also places travelers close to Costa Rica’s busy travel artery—though not right beside it. The airport is located to the north and west of Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) in San Jose, Costa Rica’s capital.

For beach seekers, the airport is positioned for access to well-known resorts. LIR is about 20 miles from the Andaz Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo. For Hilton Honors loyalists, it’s roughly 18 miles from Waldorf Astoria Costa Rica Punta Cacique.

There’s also another property on the horizon in the northern part of the country: an all-inclusive JW Marriott property set to open later this year. LIR is the closest airport for that resort, though the drive is still about 90 minutes.

Delta’s JFK–LIR plan lands right in the middle of the holiday travel surge, with the first winter departures scheduled to begin Dec. 19 and a clear end date of April 10—leaving travelers and travel planners to decide how long they want to book ahead for a season of direct flights to Guanacaste.

  1. Liberia, Costa Rica… I can already hear the gate announcements lol. I’m just glad Delta is doing something else besides to the same old places.

  2. Wait this sounds like they’re launching a nonstop to “Liberia” like the country? If it’s Costa Rica then why name it Liberia. Kinda confusing. Also weekly through April 10 sounds like it’ll get canceled at the first snow.

  3. December 19 to April 10… that’s right during holiday chaos. My cousin says flight prices will be insane but at least it’s JFK so parking better be cheap? Also A321neo—aren’t those the new planes that make you feel like you’re in a sardine can. Might still book though.
