DOVER — Delaware State University’s season-opening football game at Alumni Stadium was delayed due to lightning in the area on Aug. 27 but is now under way.

The Hornets and Stony Brook were slated to start at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Thirty minutes before that, it was announced that fans must leave their seats because of nearby lightning. The Hornets cleared the field while warming up.

Teams got back on the field, fans began returning to their seats and the Delaware State band entered the stadium at 5:53, and the game did kick off at 6:07.

There is the chance for more inclement weather later, however.
