Deion Sanders says Shedeur needs full support
Deion Sanders says Shedeur Sanders’ rookie struggles with the Browns can’t be pinned on one person, arguing a quarterback needs help from multiple positions. He also points to the team’s split results when Shedeur started versus when he didn’t.
Deion Sanders didn’t talk about Shedeur like a lone experiment under the lights in Cleveland. He talked about him like a quarterback who’s trying to build traction inside a team that has to move together.
On a recent media tour for Depend, Colorado coach Deion Sanders stopped by D.J. Siddiqi of Covers.com and addressed what it means to evaluate Shedeur’s performance as a rookie. Sanders said he would have wanted Shedeur to “perform a little better. ” but insisted it isn’t simply about an individual failing.
“A quarterback needs help tremendously from the offensive line. from the receivers. from the running game. from the coordinators as well. ” Sanders said. “It’s not just a singular thing, like a defensive back. I don’t care what the pass rush is, [the DB] has got to do his job. It’s a little different with a quarterback. He needs several things to go right for him to be successful.”.
That framing lands in an uncomfortable space for every quarterback and every fan base: the urge to look for someone to blame. versus the reality that football is a chain of responsibilities. Sanders’ argument walks right up to the line between insisting on accountability and avoiding excuses. The quarterback still has to do his job, after all.
The point ties into a familiar quarterback tension—one Deion Sanders made room for by referencing Donovan McNabb. In the reality of the sport, McNabb’s view is that the quarterback gets “too much credit for wins and too much blame for losses.”
For the Browns. that debate carries extra weight because the team’s quarterback issues have shown up often enough to become part of the storyline. Since the Browns returned to the NFL in 1999. most of the team’s bad seasons have included “less-than-ideal quarterback play. ” and Sanders’ comments sit directly in the middle of that argument.
Still, there’s a potential opening for change if Shedeur wins the starting job over Deshaun Watson. Last year, Shedeur started seven games, winning three and losing four. In the 10 games he didn’t start. the Browns went 2-8—an uneven split that keeps the conversation about opportunity and support alive as the team weighs who should be leading from the first snap.

So is Deion saying Browns need to hold his son’s hand or what?
I mean the QB still has to play though. Every time I hear “support” I’m like ok but what about accuracy and reads? Also the stat about when he started is kinda wild.
Wait I thought Shedeur was lighting it up? I saw some clip where he looked good and then people were roasting him anyway. But yeah 7 starts vs 10 not starting… that’s like the team literally flipped gears.
Deion talking like it’s all a system but fans always want a scapegoat, that’s true. But also if they bench Watson or start Shedeur, that’s gonna be blamed on the coaching instantly. Browns quarterbacks always catch heat… like maybe it’s cursed or something, idk. Depend sponsorship too? really feels like it’s more about headlines than fixing plays.
