Deion Sanders Plans Cleveland Talk With Todd Monken

Colorado coach Deion Sanders says he wants to meet new Browns head coach Todd Monken in Cleveland to discuss quarterback Shedeur Sanders as a player—insisting the conversation would be coaching-focused, not family-based.

Deion Sanders is making it clear that when he flies to Cleveland, it won’t be as a father looking for answers. It will be as a coach who believes he can help Todd Monken get the most out of quarterback Shedeur Sanders.

Sanders said the meeting date hasn’t been set, but he plans to travel to Cleveland to sit down with Monken and talk about how to develop Shedeur’s game “as a coach, not the dad.” He also said he was originally supposed to go next week, but an upcoming commercial shoot changed those plans.

“I want to meet him. Because I think it’s vital that as a coach, not the dad, I can tell him a few things about [Shedeur], how to get him going,” Sanders said. “That wasn’t asked of me a year ago. I don’t understand it.”

Sanders framed the trip as something he would want for any player he has coached. pointing to his own experience with former Colorado teammate and current Jacksonville target Travis Hunter.. Sanders said Hunter’s NFL path is proof that coaches should be open to hearing from the people who worked with the player in college.

“Even a guy like Travis Hunter being drafted to Jacksonville and I’ve had him for the last three [seasons]. don’t you think you would want to talk to me to ask me what gets him going and what backs him off?” Sanders said.. “You would want to know that.. So, I anticipate, and I can’t wait to have that conversation with Coach Monken.”

Sanders also addressed the buzz around Shedeur that has circulated inside NFL circles. He said he’s been bothered by negative talk about his son coming out of the league even before last year’s draft.

But he believes Monken will handle the situation with honesty.

“I love it, man, because he’s a straight shooter,” Sanders said of Monken. “All these little side conversations that was had before him, he ain’t with that.”
