Saturday night looked like it was slipping away in the way baseball can—quietly at first, then all at once.

The Los Angeles Dodgers held a 3-1 lead in the eighth inning when Tanner Scott took the mound against the Philadelphia Phillies. But Scott gave up three earned runs, and the Dodgers dropped the game 4-3.

The loss didn’t end with the final out, though. After the game, some baseball “fans” targeted Scott’s family online. His wife, Maddie, exposed the hateful comments on social media, posting screenshots of messages directed at her and their kids.

Among the threats were violent statements aimed at Scott’s family, including one message that said, “gun shot your family tonight.” Maddie shared the screenshot and responded with a line that cut right through the noise: “When did it stop being a game?”

She also wrote, “I don’t speak out often. Ever actually. I promise you, you don’t know what it’s like unless you’re living it.”

The posts didn’t stop there. Maddie later shared additional comments from a user wishing death on their young son, alongside wishes aimed at their baby on the way.

“The unfortunate reality Incase [sic] you were curious,” Maddie continued, pairing the text with graphic words from the user that included detailed wishes for the family’s demise.

Scott and Maddie welcomed their first son in 2023, and their second child is expected to arrive this fall.

Tanner Scott, 31, joined the Dodgers in 2025 on a four-year, $72 million deal. But the money and the roster moves didn’t matter to the messages Maddie shared—because the cruelty was aimed directly at their home and children.

For Scott and his family, the game ended with a score change, but the fallout played out in threats meant to cross every line. And there’s no room in sport for that kind of behavior.

  1. I mean if he blew the lead in the 8th then fans go crazy but death threats??? That’s wild. Also why are they posting screenshots like that, don’t they want attention?

  2. So wait, they threatened their family over a 4-3 game?? I thought the Dodgers losing was because the refs were trash or whatever. But I guess it’s actually fans being psychos. Still, the wife shouldn’t have engaged it, it’ll just make more people jump on.

  3. This is why I hate baseball Twitter. One minute it’s “gg” and the next it’s “gun shot your family tonight” like wtf. And it says their kid is 2023 so those people must be older than the internet. I don’t even know how they got the family info, seems like Dodgers should’ve shut it down faster or whatever.
