DCR reopens 24 pools and free swim lessons

DCR reopens – Massachusetts’ Department of Conservation and Recreation says 24 community pools are reopening for the summer and that free youth swimming lessons will return across the state, with classes planned for multiple sessions from July through mid-August.
On a hot day when families start thinking about pools and beaches, Massachusetts is making the first move toward keeping kids safe in the water.
The Department of Conservation and Recreation announced Thursday that it is reopening 24 community pools across the state and bringing back its free youth swimming lessons. DCR Commissioner Nicole LaChapelle said the goal is simple: “Every child deserves the opportunity to learn how to swim. Swimming is more than a summer activity –it’s a life-saving skill that helps children safely enjoy our pools. lakes and beaches with confidence.”.
The DCR said it will offer free swimming lessons for children ages four to twelve at 19 participating pools statewide as part of its Learn to Swim Program. The agency said the classes are organized by age. are built for beginner-level swimmers. and follow the American Red Cross curriculum. with an emphasis on water safety and learning basic swimming skills.
The lessons will be held at pools in Agawam, Boston, Cambridge, Chelsea, Chicopee, Clinton, Fall River, Fitchburg, Hyde Park, Lawrence, Malden, Melrose, Milford, Somerville, Springfield, Watertown, and Worcester, the DCR said.
The program is scheduled in three summer sessions. Session 1 runs from July 6 to July 14, and registration opened on June 11, the agency said. Session 2 runs from July 20 to July 31, with registration opening on July 6 at 8 a.m., the department said. Session 3 starts on August 3 and ends on August 14, with registration opening at 8 a.m. on July 20, the DCR said.
For families in Lowell, an additional option is also available. The Lowell Police Department will offer free swimming lessons at the DCR’s Raymond Memorial Swimming Pool for ages six through 16, the DCR said.
Alongside the lessons, lifeguards will be available seven days a week from 10:15 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. at 30 DCR swimming areas, the department said.
