Dave Matthews Band powers Mansfield heat with classics

At Mansfield’s Xfinity Center on June 12, 2026, Dave Matthews Band leaned hard into favorites in a 20-song set, pushing through oppressive 90-degree heat and a tropical dewpoint with what felt like pure momentum—until Matthews finished “Tripping Billies” holdi
By the time the first chords of “Pantala Naga Pampa” hit at Mansfield’s Xfinity Center on Friday night, the pavilion already felt like it had made its mind up.
A set-time temperature pushing 90 degrees. paired with a tropical dewpoint. left the air sticky in a way no stage lights can fix. At several points. Dave Matthews remarked on how cool and breezy the night was—then followed it with strategic towel-downs as sweat poured off him. He was 59, and so was the crowd’s patience for pretending it wasn’t hot.
Still, for a 20-song set spanning the band’s 30-plus year catalogue, there was little sign of a low-energy moment. Lead guitar and vocalist Matthews and drummer Carter Beauford—68—may have long since aged out of any frat boy jam band stereotype, but the music never slowed down.
The opening run set the tone. Early in the show, “Rapunzel” arrived with the immediate lift of its high-energy feel and its funky 5/4 time signature. For the past two tours. the band had been throwing fakes by playing “Pantala Naga Pampa” into other songs to spice up the setlist. Friday night in Mansfield was fake-free, and “Rapunzel” kept its place. After that came early plays of “What Would You Say” and “Granny. ” packing the beginning of the set with familiar favorites.
As the night pushed deeper. “Seek Up” stood out as an opus that looks out at a world where some people can afford the luxury of concerts while children in some countries go hungry. Then came “Crush. ” which landed like a live anthem—especially in the chorus (“Am I right side up or upside down?”). the kind the room sings together without hesitation. Beauford, an ageless powerhouse all night, shone particularly during his solo at the end of the tune.
The Mansfield crowd made sure to praise him. “Let’s go Cah-tah’s” echoed for Beauford.
But the engine of the band, in motion after motion, often felt like it came from bassist Stefan Lessard. Dave once called Lessard’s playing “melodic. ” and you could hear that on “Crush.” On “You Might Die Trying. ” his bass served as the constant thump that drove the brooding-yet-upbeat track forward. while the horns brightened everything—Jeff Coffin on saxaphone and Rashawn Ross on trumpet. nailing every note.
Then there was “Jimi Thing. ” which ranked 67th on a rankings list of DMB songs published on this website last year. Personal taste didn’t matter as much as the room’s response. The song is a crowd favorite, and the show leaned into its atmosphere. Smelling weed in the air has become a DMB-show trope. and “Jimi” only sharpened it; the lyrics plead. “If you could keep me floating. just for a while.”.
The lineup has been consistent for years now. Tim Reynolds adds a more electric feel to songs that were once entirely acoustic. Buddy Strong is on keyboard and backs up Matthews on vocals. Several shows this tour and last have featured violinists in the mold of departed band member Boyd Tinsley. but there was no such guest in Mansfield.
The night’s defining moment came during the set closer. “Tripping Billies.” The song is about living for the moment because death could come anytime. In the middle of it—after nearly two-and-a-half hours of playing. with “Billies” building toward a crescendo—Matthews broke a string on his guitar. A tech came out quickly to offer him another. but Matthews deferred. choosing to close the song and the set with the broken string.
As Beauford closed the tune with a funky take on the rhythm. Matthews held his broken guitar aloft and stared skyward. forming something like an altar. It was a quiet, almost ritual ending to a show that had never really asked the crowd to slow down. You never know what tomorrow will bring, so you might as well keep playing.

90 degree heat?? I’d melt. But at least they played “Tripping Billies” right?
So they said it was “tropical dewpoint” and then he kept saying it was breezy? Sounds like marketing to me lol. Still… 20 songs in that weather is wild. I can’t even walk to my car in that.
Wait holdi?? Isn’t that like a typo for Holdiay? Anyway, I don’t know why people care about 5/4 time signatures, but I love Dave. If he’s sweating that means it’s real or something.
Not gonna lie, I skimmed, but I saw “fake-free” and “towels” and I’m like… so were they messing up before or what? Also “Seek Up” about hungry kids, sure, but then it’s a concert venue in Mansfield charging like $200+ so idk. 68 year old drummer still going though, respect.
