DA identifies man shot and killed by police in Cambridge

The man fatally shot by police in Cambridge on Friday has been identified.

The Middlesex County District Attorney identified the victim Monday as William Woodworth, 64, of Watertown.

Around 8 p.m. Friday, Cambridge Police responded to a report of a suspicious individual in a loading dock and parking lot area behind businesses near Temple Street, according to the DA’s office.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a man in his 60s was seated in his vehicle when officers arrive at the scene. He then allegedly exited his vehicle and pointed a firearm at the officers, officials said.

After attempting to disarm the man, police fired multiple shots, striking him, the DA’s office said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. A loaded firearm was retrieved from the man at the scene, according to the DA.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing, the DA’s office said. The investigation will include witness interviews and a review of any video footage from body-worn cameras.
