Curry Barker’s momentum didn’t fade after Obsession—it surged.
The 26-year-old YouTuber-turned-filmmaker has reportedly signed an eight-figure deal with Universal and Blumhouse. setting him up to write. direct. and produce a new project. The deal marks his third film with Universal and Blumhouse after Obsession and the upcoming Anything But Ghosts. which he also wrote. directed. and stars in. Anything But Ghosts has already been shot.
Donna Langley. the NBCUniversal Entertainment chairman. praised Barker in a statement. saying. “Curry Barker has an exceptional ability to tap into the cultural zeitgeist. pairing an innate instinct for what resonates with audiences with extraordinary filmmaking prowess. Barker’s talent is redefining what’s possible and we’re thrilled to continue our partnership with him.”.
Details on the new Universal–Blumhouse film are being kept under wraps, but it’s described as an original horror idea. Barker pitched it to top brass at Universal, and he’s now set to shepherd it end-to-end.
“I’m thrilled to be reteaming with Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Universal Film Group for it. They’ve built the kind of home for bold, original storytelling that every filmmaker dreams of, and I couldn’t imagine better collaborators for this film,” Barker said.
The way this deal is arriving carries its own kind of pressure. Back in May. it was reported that Barker was given a preemptive offer of $10 million sight unseen for his next project. though it wasn’t clear which studio made that offer. In that same reporting. it was also said Blumhouse and Universal had right to first negotiations for his next project due to a deal made before Obsession.
With Obsession already delivering, the next step isn’t just another credit on Barker’s résumé. He’s now juggling multiple major genre projects—one with Universal and Blumhouse, another with A24.
In addition to the new Universal–Blumhouse film, Barker has also reportedly closed a deal to write and direct a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie for A24.
Barker previously revealed he has a “cool idea” for an Obsession sequel, but for now, the loudest signal is the pace at which studios are betting on him next—after the success that just made Obsession feel like the beginning, not the peak.

8 figures for a horror YouTuber?? that’s insane, like money printer stuff.
So he wrote, directed, and starred in the other movie too? I feel like these studios are just throwing cash at whoever’s trending. If it flops, they’ll blame the “audience” but ok.
Not gonna lie, I thought “Universal Blumhouse” was already a streaming thing, like Netflix vibes. Also wasn’t this guy’s “Obsession” already like a remake? idk, I’m probably mixing it up with something else, but I swear I heard $10 million before too.
Universal and Blumhouse giving him a blank check for a new horror… while I can’t get anyone to renew my cable. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre thing feels weird though, like how many times are they gonna reboot that same idea. Hopefully it’s not just jump scares and he actually has a story.
