Curacao arrive for World Cup in windowless school bus

Curacao arrive – Curacao, the smallest country ever to reach a FIFA World Cup, has arrived for its 2026 debut in a windowless school bus as luxury travel dominates North America. The viral images followed a qualification that came via a tense 0-0 draw away to Jamaica last Nove

A windowless school bus rolled into view for Curacao’s World Cup preparations—and for a moment, the contrast with everything else around football’s biggest tournament felt almost too perfect.

While so many of the sport’s stars are set to move across North America in luxury coaches and private jets. Curacao’s players were filmed crammed into an old-school bus with no windows as they continued getting ready for their historic debut at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The clip went viral fast. sparking a wave of reactions online and a flood of comparisons to the Jamaican bobsled team made famous in the film “Cool Runnings.”.

It’s a detail that has landed precisely because Curacao’s story has never been about scale. The population of the island is just over 150,000—roughly the same size as Darwin—yet it is now the smallest country by both size and population ever to reach football’s biggest stage.

Curacao won that ticket last November with a tense 0-0 draw away to Jamaica. In a competition where margins are usually brutal, the result did something that’s hard to overstate for a football outsider: it put the Caribbean island on the map, and it kept it there.

Back home, celebrations erupted across Curacao—and, according to the players, the excitement has barely subsided. Midfielder Juninho Bacuna said: “It’s crazy. Since we qualified for the World Cup. you see some people thinking. like. ‘Who is Curaçao?’ and then they’re going to look it up and see. like. ‘Oh. okay. Curaçao is quite nice’.”.

Fellow midfielder Tahith Chong. the only member of the squad actually born on the island. described how the qualification has changed the mood around them. “It’s an amazing feeling. I think for all of us, everyone’s been proud,” Chong said. “The World Cup, I don’t think the island has stopped talking about the World Cup.”.

What makes Curacao’s rise feel even more specific is the unique football identity behind it. Even though the island sits off the coast of Venezuela. Curacao remains part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. and every player in the squad is a Dutch national. Their football transformation has also had a notable figure at the center of it: Dutch coach Dick Advocaat helped reshape the side after taking charge in 2024.

For many players, though, the story of belonging isn’t complicated—it’s lived. Captain Leandro Bacuna was born in the Dutch city of Groningen. but he insists there has never been confusion about where he belongs. “I grew up in the Netherlands. I was born in the Netherlands,” Bacuna said. “And my father, the first thing he said to me is that ‘you’re not from the Netherlands. You are pure Curaçao’.”.

There are real pressures beneath the celebration too. Around 30 per cent of residents live below the poverty line. and for many young people. football can be one of the few routes toward opportunities that might otherwise feel out of reach. That’s why the World Cup qualification resonates far beyond matchdays.

Superfan Brenton “Blueface” Balentian was among those overcome with emotion when Curacao secured their place. “It brought everybody together,” Balentian said. “They were supporting Curaçao and that was for me the biggest and prettiest thing I’ve ever seen.”

Curacao now step into the tournament as the smallest nation to ever qualify for a FIFA World Cup. and the players are facing a Group E draw that includes Germany. Ecuador and Ivory Coast. The “Blue Wave” will not have the luxury travel that many of their opponents can expect. but after a qualification built on a 0-0 draw in Jamaica and a trip made unforgettable by a school bus with no windows. Curacao’s message is already out there.
