Bloodied but unbowed, Alex Bregman had a three-word message for Chicago Cubs fans:
“I’ll be back.”
Bregman, struck in the left eye by a foul ball while standing in the on-deck circle Sunday, Sept. 21, posted a pair of photos to his Instagram story after undergoing tests.
The grim news: Bregman looks like hell, a nasty shiner that’s rendered his left eye practically shut after Michael Busch’s foul ball on a check swing took one hop and clocked Bregman standing nearby.
The good news: He’s returned to Chicago, his eye appears intact and he seems insistent that he’ll return to play.
The Cubs are off Monday and have a magic number of one to clinch a National League wild card berth. They’d begin a best-of-three National League wild-card series Tuesday, Sept. 29, very likely against one of the Padres, Phillies or Braves.
Bregman has been one of their best hitters since late July, with 16 homers and a 1.052 OPS in 51 games since July 27.
