Pitcher Edward Cabrera is reportedly returning from injury on Saturday, but he will have a new role with the Cubs.
Chicago Cubs pitcher Edward Cabrera is being activated from the injured list on Saturday. While he’s been a starting pitcher throughout his career — and has made 15 starts this season — Cabrera will join the bullpen after returning from injury, Patrick Mooney of The Athletic reports.
“The Cubs are activating Edward Cabrera and adding him to their bullpen ahead of today’s game against the Pirates at Wrigley Field. In the corresponding roster move, Trent Thornton was placed on the injured list with left ankle soreness,” Mooney shared on X, formerly Twitter.
Cabrera has been on the injured list due to a blister on his finger. Now, he is set to return. As for the bullpen move, it should be mentioned that the idea surfaced a few weeks ago. It is now officially happening, though.
The move makes sense. Cabrera may have needed more time to build up as a starter, so having him move to the bullpen allows him to return sooner. The Cubs’ bullpen has been incredibly inconsistent so Cabrera could make a difference in this new role.
Additionally, his performance as a starting pitcher was less than ideal this season. The right-hander turned in a lackluster 5.68 ERA across his 15 outings on the mound. The Cubs will likely have him return to the rotation next season — this is the same pitcher who turned in a respectable 3.53 ERA in 26 starts with the Miami Marlins in 2025 — but he is joining the bullpen for now.
Chicago will host the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday afternoon at 2:20 PM ET.
