CHICAGO — The sellout crowd at Guaranteed Rate Field finally got its home spotlight, and the White Sox still couldn’t stop the Cubs from taking control.
Carson Kelly delivered the turning point with a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning. then added more damage later as Chicago pulled away for a 10-5 win on Friday night.. Kelly had an RBI single in the fourth. then kept the pressure on after Chicago wasted early leads of 1-0 and 4-1.. In the seventh. he produced a bases-loaded infield hit against Bryan Hudson (1-1) to move the Cubs ahead for good at 5-4.. He made it worse in the eighth with a two-run double that helped Chicago push the lead to 10-4.
The Cubs’ offense was built on production across the lineup, finishing with 14 hits.. Seiya Suzuki also snapped an 0-for-17 skid with an RBI single that put Chicago ahead 4-1 early in the swing.. Jarred Kelenic closed out the scoring for the White Sox with his first home run. a 446-foot shot off Javier Assad in the ninth.
Former Blue Jays pitcher Trent Thornton (2-0) kept the Cubs’ momentum flowing, striking out two in two perfect innings. For Chicago, the night wasn’t just about the hits—it was about preventing the White Sox from building back after getting behind.
Jordan Hicks, however, couldn’t hold the line when it mattered most. The White Sox reliever walked four and allowed four runs while getting two outs in the eighth.

In Denver, Merrill Kelly threw his first career complete game as Arizona beat Colorado 9-1, with Ildemaro Vargas going 4-for-5 and driving in two runs.
