On the eastern Caribbean island of St. Kitts and Nevis, a search that stretched for days ended Monday with the discovery of a cruise ship passenger’s body.
Local authorities said Chinese national Wang Zyuan, 33, was last seen on May 27 while hiking the Mount Liamuiga hiking trail. Police confirmed in a statement that search crews had located his body.
The statement offered condolences to Wang’s family. friends. and associates. while urging the public to “refrain from speculation” and rely only on official sources as the matter proceeds. Police said he was hiking on St. Kitts by himself and that he had called 911 that afternoon to report he was lost. but they later lost contact with him.
Police did not provide other details, including the cause of death, saying only that the investigation is ongoing.
Search crews and volunteers scoured the area for days before finding his body.
The trail runs on the dormant Mount Liamuiga volcano, the highest peak on St. Kitts at nearly 3,800 feet. And long before Wang vanished, the hike carried an unusually stark warning.
A Caribbean cruise ship company that advertises the trail on its website cautioned that the route is “an extremely strenuous hike.” It also warned that the trail can be muddy or slippery—details that now land with a heavier weight after a day-trip into the island’s terrain ended in death.
For now, the investigation remains open, with police asking the public not to guess as they work to determine what happened during Wang’s time on the mountain.
