Cruise boat capsizes in central India, leaving at least 9 dead

A cruise boat capsized in the Narmada River near Bargi Dam in Madhya Pradesh, killing at least nine and prompting a major rescue and probe.

A sudden capsize in central India is being treated as a tragedy with a long list of victims and a fast-moving rescue operation under way.

A tourist cruise boat overturned in the Narmada River near Khamariya Island on April 30, in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, leaving at least nine people dead, Misryoum reports.. Among those killed was a woman and her four-year-old son, whose bodies were recovered during search efforts at the Bargi Dam area.

Rescuers said about 29 people had been rescued so far, while several others were receiving treatment for injuries. Search teams continued to look for those still missing as conditions remained difficult near the water.

What happens next is crucial for families and for authorities trying to understand why the disaster unfolded so quickly, especially with weather turning harsh during the incident.

The search and recovery effort involved multiple agencies, including the army, the NDRF, and units operating under state disaster response arrangements.. Officials said rescue activity continued through the night despite rain and darkness, with lights and specialized equipment used to reach and retrieve those in the water.

Commandant of the Home Guard SDRF Neeraj Singh Rajput said teams faced significant challenges, but recovered several bodies after additional forces arrived.. He also noted that the submerged vessel remained stuck at a depth of nearly six metres, complicating recovery due to poor underwater visibility.

In parallel, India’s Prime Minister expressed grief and announced financial support for affected families, according to Misryoum. The Prime Minister’s Office said goodwill payments would be provided to the next of kin of each deceased victim, while those injured would also receive assistance.

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Tourism Minister Dharmendra Singh Lodhi ordered an investigation into the incident, which involved a tourism department cruise. He indicated that if negligence was found, authorities would take strong action, and warned that the death toll could rise.

The state government said the accident may have been linked to a seasonal cyclone, with multiple teams deployed immediately.. Even so, Misryoum noted that accounts from survivors pointed to possible safety shortcomings, including claims that passengers were not provided life jackets, while officials said some did have them.

The overlap of rough weather, conflicting accounts about safety protocols, and the ongoing probe means clarity may take time.. For the families waiting by Bargi Dam, the most important part is that the missing are found and the investigation explains what went wrong, not just how the tragedy happened.
