Critics Mock Trump By Renaming Lake Ontario Themselves — And Their Ideas Are Hilarious

Surprisingly, no one thought of “Lake STFU” — even if that was the general vibe.

The navigational service MapQuest reminded everyone of its existence Thursday when the company led a rebellion of sorts against President Donald Trump’s executive order renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America.

The executive order, signed Thursday, is part of the president’s broader beef with Canada, which we wish we could explain — but even the Wall Street Journal’s editorial board is having a hard time understanding it.

The conflict might boil down to Trump’s desire to make Canada the 51st state, despite Canada’s consistent rejection of the idea.

Tensions between the U.S. and Canada reached an actual boiling point Saturday when Trump imposed 50% tariffs on about $20 billion in Canadian goods. In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney vowed to match the U.S. tariffs “dollar for dollar.”

So, Trump decided that a Great Lake that shares a name with a Canadian province should be renamed to “Lake America.” The move closely resembles a stunt the president pulled in 2025, when he declared he would rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.”

MapQuest, at the very least, made it clear that it has no intention of changing their maps to reflect Trump’s order.

“We’re not changing it,” the company tweeted Thursday on X with a screenshot of its map surrounding Lake Ontario.

Not long after, the company published a follow-up tweet featuring an idea it has utilized in the past.

“We’re not changing the name of Lake Ontario. Name it whatever you want at your leisure,” the company wrote, offering a link to a name generator tool that allows users to change the name of Lake Ontario on a map.

MapQuest then asked participants to tag them in their creations. The company even started the game by coming up with their own new name for Lake Ontario: “Lake Are We Doing This Again?”

Trump critics took the opportunity to mock the president for numerous failures and misgivings, like his jealousy of former President Barack Obama, the Iran war and his links to Jeffrey Epstein. Other users were sillier, with one making a reference to the 2016 Boaty McBoatface kerfuffle.
