Canada and Germany pledge deeper critical-minerals stockpile push

ÉVIAN, France, June 17, 2026 /CNW/ – “Prime Minister Carney and Chancellor Merz took stock of shared challenges in the raw materials supply chains of both Canada and Germany. They agreed to cooperate closely on the issue, both bilaterally and in the G7, and stressed the need for industry to diversify raw materials supply chains. Under the Joint Declaration of Intent announced in August 2025, Germany and Canada have already deepened critical minerals supply chain integration through a Canadian business mission to Munich, a high-level
German critical‑minerals delegation to the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) annual convention, and the launch of a joint supply chain mapping initiative to identify priority battery‑value‑chain opportunities. Building on the success of this collaboration, Canada and Germany agree to work together to advance critical mineral supply chain resiliency focused on enhancing a partnership on critical minerals stockpiling and leading to capital investments by the end of 2026.” This document is also available at https://pm.gc.ca SOURCE Prime Minister’s Office View original content: http://www.newswire.ca/en/releases/archive/June2026/17/c8439.html

So they’re stockpiling minerals now? Cool cool.
I don’t get why this needs a whole pledge. Like, can’t they just buy the stuff like normal? Also “battery-value-chain” sounds made up.
Wait, is Canada stockpiling for Germany or is Germany stockpiling for Canada? The article makes it sound like both but then mentions G7 too so I’m lost. PDAC PDAC… that’s miners right? I’m just thinking this is gonna raise prices here somehow.
This reads like future control of EV batteries. Next thing you know they’ll be rationing lithium like water. End of 2026 capital investments?? That’s not even that far. I’m not saying it’s bad but it definitely feels like a secret plan for supply chain power.
