Firefighters are battling a structure fire at the historic Lochmoor Club in Grosse Pointe Woods.

A Grosse Pointe Woods Department of Public Safety dispatcher said crews were at the site of the club, located just off Mack Avenue, at about 5:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Around 3 p.m., the Grosse Pointe Public School System posted on Facebook that families should avoid the area so emergency vehicles can access the scene.

Officials have not yet explained how the fire started or how much damage has occurred. More information will be released as it becomes available, authorities said. Members were told the fire started in the kitchen.

The two-story Lochmoor Club was designed by John H. Sweeney and Walter Travis and opened in 1918, along with the clubhouse. The original clubhouse was destroyed by a fire in 1924 and rebuilt.

The clubhouse underwent significant renovations in the past few years.

Larry Alman, 74, of Grosse Pointe is a member at the club with his wife Cheryl. Larry Alman was in the clubhouse’s gym when the fire started.

“I had to leave because the smell was not tolerable,” he said Wednesday afternoon.
