Cowboys RB Malik Davis will miss time with a “pretty serious” hip injury

The Cowboys have ruled out running back Malik Davis for Sunday’s season opener, and they are bracing for him to miss significant time.
Executive vice president Stephen Jones said on 105.3 The Fan that Davis was carted off from practice Friday with a “pretty serious” hip injury.
“Unfortunately, I think he’s looking at a pretty serious injury that could take him out for some period of time,” Jones said, via Nick Eatman of the team website. “We don’t have the final details, we’ll know more, but certainly so disappointed for Malik. Obviously, tough for our team, but like anything, it’s next man up.”
Davis won the backup job to Javonte Williams and was expected to play a significant role in the offense. The Cowboys’ initial 53-player roster included only those two running backs before they claimed veteran Emari Demercado off waivers as the third back.
Dallas has Israel Abanikanda on the practice squad, and he will likely get a call-up for Sunday’s game.
The Cowboys, though, could be in the market for another veteran running back.
Every other player on the roster had full participation Friday, and no one other than Davis has an injury designation.
