Cost of living tops Mallorcans’ worries in new poll

The cost of living and access to housing. These are the two biggest concerns of citizens of Mallorca and of the other Balearic islands according to a poll by the Balearic Institute of Social Studies. In Mallorca, 89% of those surveyed ranked the increase in prices as their biggest worry. For the Balearics as a whole, the percentage was only slightly lower – 88.4%. In general, the level of concern was similar for all categories included in the survey. For the five main ones, percentages
in Mallorca were above the rest of the Balearics, but not by much. Access to housing in Mallorca (81.2%); road congestion (77.6%); tourist overcrowding (75.9%); an excess of holiday rental properties (75.7%). It can perhaps be concluded that there are certain links between these categories, with concerns shared by three-quarters and more of those surveyed. After these five, none of the categories is a concern for more than two-thirds. In sixth position is insecurity (63.7% in Mallorca). Immigration is eighth (63.1%), and population growth ninth
(62.7%). Employment is a concern for 53%, the two lowest ranked categories being climate change (49.2%) and ‘decline of the islands’ native language’ (40.8%). The survey, which was conducted between June 1 and 5 this year, was of 1,300 people – 300 in Palma, 300 in the rest of Mallorca, 300 in Menorca, 300 in Ibiza, and 100 in Formentera.
