Contreras’ homer lifts Red Sox; cooler incident sparks

Willson Contreras delivered a two-run homer and finished 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs in the Red Sox’ win over the Yankees Friday night—then frustration boiled over after he collided with Andruw Monasterio in the eighth inning and kicked a Gatorade cooler in the dugout

Willson Contreras’ night in the Bronx had everything: a rocket to the second deck, a celebratory bat flip, and then a sudden, ugly jolt of frustration that spilled out in the Red Sox dugout.

It started in the top of the fifth inning, when Contreras launched a no-doubter 2-run homer into the second deck at Yankee Stadium. He followed it with an emphatic bat flip as the moment peaked.

The Red Sox also struck earlier in the game, when Contreras hit a chopper up the third base line that brought home Jarren Duran with ease, putting Boston on the board.

But the emotional swing came in the eighth inning. Contreras collided with fellow Red Sox infielder Andruw Monasterio on a routine fly ball, then trotted back into the dugout screaming. In a burst of visible frustration, he directed his anger at a Gatorade cooler close by, spiking it out of temper.

Contreras finished the night 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs, and the Red Sox turned his power and hustle into the kind of momentum they’ve been chasing in 2026.

Two weeks earlier. interim manager Chad Tracy had described Contreras as the kind of player who changes the rhythm of a lineup. Tracy said, “He’s a leader. His work ethic is off the charts,” adding, “He works really hard, but he plays the game hard. He runs the ball down the line. he’s max effort on defense. and obviously what he does in the batter’s box is no secret. So when you see a guy of his caliber that’s been around as long as he has. and for the younger guys to see how hard he plays. it’s an example for everybody.”.

Tracy also spoke about why the Red Sox’ offense has leaned on two key figures—Jarren Duran and Contreras—saying on Duran. “Everybody knows what he’s capable of doing… he’s an offensive force when he’s going right. ” and on Contreras. “He’s a leader… he plays the game…” and that “he runs the ball down the line” and “he’s max effort on defense.”.

Offensively, the numbers match the reputation. Contreras has 13 home runs to lead Boston in 2026 and is batting .299, second on the team behind Mickey Gasper, who has far fewer at-bats and is batting .306—only .007 higher than Contreras.

The rivalry keeps rolling. The Red Sox and Yankees play again Saturday night, with a 7:35 p.m. first pitch.
