Comparing Patriots’ Christian Gonzalez contract details to Seahawks’ Devon Witherspoon before Week 1 showdown

The New England Patriots secured Christian Gonzalez with a four-year, $135 million extension early Tuesday morning, and the structure of the star cornerback’s new contract draws several notable comparisons to Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon’s deal.

The extensions come into focus as New England prepares to face Seattle in a Super Bowl rematch Wednesday at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC.

NBC Sports Boston’s Albert Breer broke down Gonzalez’s contract on X, formerly known as Twitter, revealing a $33 million signing bonus and significant guarantees throughout the deal.

Gonzalez’s deal carries a $33.75 million annual average and reportedly includes $102 million in total guarantees. Breer also highlighted how the agreement compares with Witherspoon’s extension.

The early vesting dates provide Gonzalez with additional long-term security. According to Breer, those protections resemble the structure Trent McDuffie received but were not included in Witherspoon’s agreement.

Christian Gonzalez extension makes statement for Patriots

ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported that Gonzalez and his representatives used the beginning of the regular season and Witherspoon’s deal with Seattle as leverage during negotiations. New England had reportedly been the more aggressive side in talks dating to the spring, while Gonzalez’s camp remained willing to assume the injury risk associated with continuing negotiations.

Gonzalez also strengthened his position with his performance throughout training camp. Reiss highlighted the cornerback’s competitive one-on-one work against A.J. Brown, describing the matchup as one of the more impressive aspects of Patriots camp despite Gonzalez’s unresolved contract situation at the time.

The agreement also reinforces New England’s stated philosophy of drafting, developing and retaining its own players. Gonzalez has emerged as one of the franchise’s defensive cornerstones since the Patriots selected him with the No. 17 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

While Gonzalez reportedly holds the higher total guarantee and annual average, Witherspoon received $59 million fully guaranteed at signing, according to Reiss. Gonzalez received $53.928 million fully guaranteed over the first two years, with additional money becoming guaranteed through the early vesting dates.

The timing adds another layer to Wednesday’s matchup. Gonzalez and Witherspoon entered the NFL together as first-round selections in 2023 and have since developed into two of the league’s premier cornerbacks.

Now both enter the 2026 season with major long-term commitments from their respective franchises as the Patriots and Seahawks meet in a rematch of their Super Bowl LX showdown.
