On the eve of preorders, Commodore has decided to meet would-be buyers halfway. The company is bringing the Commodore Callback 8020 back into the phone spotlight, with preorders opening on June 30 and several models now starting at $399 instead of $500.
The change applies to the BASIC Beige, ProtoPET White, SX Silver, and the translucent blue Starlight Edition versions of the privacy-focused flip phone. The Founders Edition model—set apart by its 24 karat gold—will keep its original price of $640.
The $100 reduction isn’t a straight trade of nothing for something. The baseline phones will no longer include Hi-Def IEM earphones by default. Instead, they will come with a secondhand memory chip by default. Commodore is also keeping the same coverage for buyers: a one-year warranty on both the new phones and the lower-priced options. If you want the Hi-Def IEM earphones and premium memory, both will be available as upgrade options.
In a blog post announcing the adjustment. Commodore said: “The worldwide response to the Commodore Callback has been an incredible endorsement of our vision.” The company added that “many of you told us you wanted a more accessible entry point.” It said it “listened” and that. “Over the past week. we’ve worked tirelessly with our partners to find ways to lower the price while staying true to the product we’ve set out to build.”.
The timing is striking. With today already bringing news that Apple and Xbox products are going up in price, Commodore’s move lands as a rare countercurrent—an attempt to make a retro-styled, privacy-focused device easier to afford right before people can place their orders.

So they cut $100 but remove the earphones? That’s basically a scam deal lol.
Wait… is this the same thing as those “privacy phones” that actually track you worse? I heard flips are always garbage battery too.
Honestly I don’t get it. If it’s $399 now but it comes with a memory chip that’s like… not the same as the earphones, right? Who even cares about IEMs on a flip phone.
June 30 preorders, ok. But Founders Edition is still like $640?? So the gold one is the only “real” one? Also why are they talking about Apple and Xbox prices going up like that makes this better. Seems like they’re just trying to sell the basics and upsell everything.
