Commanders’ Stefon Diggs makes training camp appearance with new jersey number

It looks like Stefon Diggs and the Washington Commanders are both happy campers, even though there’s a massive catch to the signing. Still, Diggs made a Commanders training camp appearance with a new jersey number, according to a post on X by John Keim.

The Commanders agreed to a one-year contract with Diggs this week, worth a maximum value of $12 million, according to spotrac.com. In his 11 years in the NFL, Diggs has played for the Vikings, Bills, Texans, and Patriots. He has 942 career catches for 11,504 yards and 74 touchdowns. On the NFL’s all-time career list, Diggs ranks No. 24 in catches, No. 38 in receiving yards, and No. 43 in receiving touchdowns.

Last year, Diggs totaled 85 catches for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns while helping the Patriots reach the Super Bowl.

Will Commanders WR Stefon Diggs be a fit?

There’s plenty of debate about the subject. But one thing seems clear. The Commanders are better with him than they were without him. And that’s true even if he doesn’t reach his typical standards in 2026, according to ESPN.

“This move might not transform the offense, but it does make it better for sure,” Keim wrote. “Diggs gives them an immediate boost as a second receiving target, someone who can play in the slot or the Z — also known as flanker — position. With New England last season, he ran 171 routes when aligned wide and 191 when in the slot.”

But there’s still a question of consistency, as Keim pointed out. Diggs had five standout games with over 100 yards, but didn’t get over 70 in any of the others.

The good news is that Diggs has been brought to the Commanders as their No. 2 option. Defenses will scheme to control Terry McLaurin. That should allow Diggs to consistently make big plays, especially with the accuracy and arm talent possessed by quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Overall, the Commanders have shored up arguably their weakest position on the roster. Whether it works in the long term remains to be seen.
